Chapter 28

Charlene's POV

" Lolita! Wait up! " I shouted at her as I stomped over to her and her gang of girls.

" Loly, who's this? " One of them shot a confused glance in my direction. At this point I was fuming.

" Now I know your standards are low, " I heard a few girls gasp. I had her attention now. ", but I never thought you'd stoop this low. Now where's Ebony? "

She glanced at me oddly. " What the hell do you even mean? " She said.

" She wasn't in her bed when I woke up! The door was wide open, even a few scratch marks on the walls and furniture! Do you know what this means?!" I shouted at her. At this point everyone nearby had also caught on and started watching. The group of girls had slowly backed away from us.

" What? " She said coldly.

" Those are signs of a struggle! And the walls are made of stone! The scratch marks were covered in blood, Lolita! Someone kidnapped her! You're the only one who had anything against her!" I yelled.

" Well, I didn't do it. Now I don't know what made you even think I did, it just looks like you're crazy. " She said.

" Crazy Charlie, crazy Charlie! " Her friends began chanting. Before I could even stop myself, my fist collided with Lolita's face. I heard a sickening crunch. I'd broken her nose. She fell back, holding her hands to her face. She glared at me, before getting up and punching me in the eye. A prefect ran up to us and held us back from each other and in a blink of an eye I was in my dads office sitting next to the person I hate the most, at least right now.

He looked at me disappointedly. " So what was this about? "

" She accused me of kidnapping her friend! Then she punched me! " Lolita said angrily. Hearing it out loud, it does sound a bit far fetched.

My dad stared at me. " Ebony's gone missing, and the only person she was on bad terms with was her. " I muttered. He looked at me, a little shocked. " OK then. I'll let you both off with a warning. " He said. Lolita stood up and looked down at him angrily.

" Come on! She broke my nose! She made a scene in the hallway! Shouldn't she at least get a detention?!" She yelled.

" Miss Kirke, I'll have to ask you to leave and go to the nurse. Charlene and I need to talk. " He said. She left the room angrily, but not before muttering, " Its only because she's your daughter. "

Dad turned to look at me. " Now I know this is hard for you, losing for brother and now your best friend.. " He started. I cut him off.

" You don't understand! There were scratch marks and everything! In the stone walls! Stone! They were bloodstained too! " I argued.

" Charlie, you're overthinking things. There's no way she could have done that, not without waking everyone up. " He said.

" They'd gotten into an argument that night! Well kind of. Lolita ended up storming off because Ebony said something. " I said.

He furrowed his eyebrows. "That couldn't have happened either. She was serving a detention with me for disrupting the class. " He explained. " Now go to your dorm, I'll get the teachers to give you a day to cool down. "

I got up, taking his last sentence as a goodbye.

" But don't go doing this again. I can't keep getting you out of trouble. My job's on the line. " He said. " And take care. I don't want to lose you too. "

" You too. " I said before leaving. I went down into the common room and into my dorm room. I heard a rustling under Ebony's bed. I checked under it, to see something moving in a paper bag. Oh right! Vicky, her snake!

I looked in her drawers to find her diary. She doesn't exactly keep it a secret, so it was relatively easy to find. I flicked through the pages to find the spell that made Vicky big. I eventually found it and cast it on Vicky. Thankfully she didn't attack me and instead curled up in a coil-like position on Ebony's bed. I quickly locked the door before anything else, so nobody could come in here and see me. I went back to the beds and sat on the edge of my missing friends bedside.

" So, what do snakes eat? " I muttered to myself. Someone had to take care of her. I wasn't going to let Ebony's pet die.

" Well you could jusssst asssk. " A shrill voice said.

" Huh? Oh you. " I said. The charm must have also made her talk or something.

" Aren't you ssssurprisssed? " She said. Her high voice was high enough to hurt my ears.

" Not really. The spell must've done this. " I said, trying to think logically.

" Ebony never usssssed to talk to me. " She said.

" Kind of weird but ok. What do you think made me understand you then? " I said.

" You could be able to sssspeak parsssseltoungue. " She said. I snorted.

" The gene's dead now. There's no way I could. " I said. " Anyway, what do you eat? "

" Jussst leave me sssome bugsss and water every onccccce in a while. " She said. " And maybe ssssspeak to me ssssometimessss. "

" Okay. I'll go find some bugs. " I said. I got up and unlocked the door. " Bye. "

" Be ssssafe. " Vicky said. I locked the door behind me.
