Chapter 52

Charlene's POV

I woke up earlier than I usually do. For a moment I forgot about the mess I was in, but the world quickly reminded me of that by making the giant squid in the lake jump out and splash me with water. I quickly scrambled to my feet and noticed that Jasper wasn't where I left him. I looked around to spot him, still asleep, on the other side of the tree trunk. Just then I remembered something. I opened my bag to let Vicky have some air.

" Finally. " She hissed. " I thought I'd never ssssee the light of day again. "

" Yeah, yeah, I'll get you some food. " I said.

" I'm not hungry, " She complained. " Bessides, you gave me sssspiders the sssize of tarantulasss lassst time. "

" Well, you're not going to be able to eat for a while, I don't think. " I said.

" I'll ssssurvive. " She said.

" Suit yourself. " I said.

" You really can talk to her, can't you? " Jasper said, his voice startling me. " What were you even talking about? I couldn't understand a word. "

" What do you mean? Was I speaking parseltoungue or something? " I asked.

" You were speaking? " He asked, confused.

" Well anyway, she was complaining about me feeding her. " I said.

" A bit weird but ok. " He said.

I looked over to where the others were before. The Gryffindor trio were still fast asleep, sprawled across the grass. Mia was awake and foraging for food in a bag. Meanwhile, Seraphina was still sitting in front of the cauldron, stirring it almost mechanically.

" Should we just leave her be or..? " Jasper whispered to me. Seraphina immediately snapped out of her half asleep state.

" What..? " She mumbled. " Oh my god! Thank Merlin you woke me up! I was only supposed to stir for half an hour.. "

I glared at her. " Sleeping on the job? "

" Sleeping in the middle of a crisis? " She retorted.

" It's too early for this... " Mia yawned, " Quit fighting and eat. "

" She's right," Jasper said. " Let's see what we've got.. " He picked up the bag and looked through it. He took out two small bagels that looked like they'd seen better days.  He gave one each to me and Sera. She took hers while I handed mine back.

" I'm not hungry.. " I said, looking at the disfigured bagel in distaste.

" Suit yourself. " He said. He managed to eat the entire bagel in three bites.

" Oh my god is that a snake?! " Seraphina squealed. I noticed that Vicky had crept up my arm and was resting on my shoulder. She opened her eyes and hissed at her.

" Why do you have something like that?! " She asked.

" She's not mine. She's Ebony's. " I explained.

" Is she venomous? " Sera asked again.

" Wanna find out? " I said.

" No thank you. " She glared at me.

" I'm hungry. " Vicky hissed in my ear.

" I asked you that a few minutes ago! " I whispered.

" Well I am now. " She said. " I want some grassshoppersss. "

" I'll be right back. " I muttered. I walked over to the tree and started searching through the grass. I finally grabbed ahold of a small cricket. Vicky slithered down my arm, and I barely managed to get my fingers away from her before she bit the insect. After finishing it off, she crawled back up my arm, down my back and into my bag.

" Let's get back to the others.. " I mumbled to myself.
