To say that I was nervous would be a lie. I was terrified. Going into school for the first time in years can do that to you, right? But knowing that the only person you know is 2 grades above you is what makes it that much more stressing.
Snapping out of my thoughts, I turned away from the school building to look back at my dads car, where he gave me one last encouraging smile and drove off down the road. Well, I guess I should get going.
I don't think I have ever seen this many people in such a small space, honestly when we came here on the weekend the school seemed way more spacious. With 20 minutes left until class I decided to drift slowly in the direction of my first lesson. Whilst walking , many students I saw stood in small groups chatting away and I am not going to lie but that did make me feel like a total outsider. But I did catch a few rather interesting conversations. Many girls were talking about the 'golden five ' or 'the kings' which I can only assume applied to some boys. Too soon I thought that, when I neared my class I found a bunch of girls giggling and pointing forwards. Following their line of sight I found what I could assume were 'the kings' but what surprised me was a certain familliar head of black hair and beige hoodie.
"Gabe!" All the girls as well as the five boys turned to look in my direction. Upon noticing me Gabe grinned and rushed over to pick me up in a spinning hug.
"Kaycee" while I laughed I vaguely saw the girls icy glares and the looks of confusion on the boys faces.
"What are you doing here, i thought you were homeschooled?" Gabe asked after setting me down.
"I am still homescooled but we just moved closer to the studio so mum put me here until she sorted everything out. You dont sound too excited?" I asked, lightly punching his shoulder to which he laughed and swung an arm over my shoulders.
"Come on , lets meet some people!"still grinning I allowed myself to be dragged along towards the rest of the boys, practically feeling the girls eyes burn holes in my back.
" Hey guys, I would like you to meet Kaycee Rice." I waved shyly under who I assumed to be older boys gazes.
"Are you two together? "The boy asking had black hair and tanned skin.
"No" the simultaneous answer from Gabe and I made the boys laugh.
"Well I think we should introduce ourselves, Im Josh"said a dark skinned boy with longish hair while stretching a hand out towards me. Taking it , I shook it confidently and turned to look at the rest of the boys.
"Sure, im Will" said another dark skinned boy giving me a small nod. Then I let my eyes drift over to the two other boys. One that asked Gabe and I if we were together and the other that seemed to have asian roots, with black messy hair under a cap. I do admitt he looked sort of cute but that oppinion could always change.
"Im Kenneth San Jose, mylady"said the earlier bowing down with a smirk. A corner of my lips twitched upwards and I looked sideways at Gabe.
"He's a bit extra, huh?", I assumed the boys heard as they started to laugh at once.
"He can deffinitely be" repplied the last boy,"Sean Lew" he smiled at me but looked questioningly the next moment. "I do feel like we've met before."
I shruged "We might have, dance class maybe, thats where I spend most of my time." As if on que, all of the boys but Kens, eyes lit up in recognition. I guess we have met before ?
"Oh yo-" Sean never got to finish his sentence as Ken seemed to find that just the right moment to interrupt.
"I didnt know you did ballet, Sean,"
"Ballet?", I didnt exactly remember mentioning ballet.
"Well, yeah. What other kind of dance would a girl like you do?" Ken asked as if he was saying something blantly obvious.
"What do you mean a girl like me?"but I never got an answer as the bell rung through the corridor. After saying a quick goodbye to the boys and finding out that they were all indeed 2 grades ahead, I entered the classroom. Honestly, it felt more like a zoo than a classroom. Kids were everywhere, squealing and screaming so it was no wonder that nobody noticed me quietly make my way towards the already exhausted looking teacher. I lightly tapped her shoulder and upon meeting her eyes I recognised her as my so called tour guide of the school from the weekend.
"Nice to see you Kaycee" she smiled at me warmly and I returned her smile. Then came the unexpected "SILENCE". Okay I admitt it worked to calm everyone down but I think it might have also burst my eardrum. Now the whole class was staring at me and I noticed some girls from earlier.
"Now class, this is your new student Kaycee Rice. Go ahead and pick a seat Kaycee."after another smile and a look around I noticed a spare seat in the middle row between an asian looking girl with short hair and a tanned girl with long black hair.
"Hey, can I sit here?" I asked both girls timidly, pointing to the chair. Receiving quick nods from both of my classmates I sat down waiting for the teachers instructions. I was quite scared to step out of line or be myself which really isn't like me.
"So today we are having some time to get aquainted with your new class to make you all comfortable for the rest of term", the professor clapped and the class went back to loud chatter.
"So you're new here, huh?"asked the asian girl to my left.
"Yeah"
"You want to join us at lunch, " piped in the other girl. I turned to look at her with a confused expression and she seeming to understand my train of thought continued"Sorry, Im Tati Mcquay, the other girl is Bailey" they both smiled awaiting an answer.
"Sure" after that we got into a chat about hobbies and out prefferences, turns out we were all dancers meaning we had quite a bit in common. Our conversation was cut off when a loud knock rang out through the class. In came in a woman, pressumably a teacher, but I couldn't tell as she was wearing quite informal clothes. What I didn't expect was for her to be followed by the so called 'kings'. "Silence class", our teacher, Miss Beck , spoke but it wasn't really necessery as most of the class was already staring mesmorised at the boys.
"Thank you, as most of you know I am Tricia, the dance choreographer at this school." She looked around the class seeking their approval and continued "You may also know that our school has an annual dance program" ok, now this I wasn't told about "the boys behind me" she said pointing to the boys who all either waved or noded with Kenneth winking at some girls" are the ones who were chosen this year, now it is time for the girls' choice", once again her eyes moved around the room to see tons of excited teen girls, giggling and bouncing in their chairs.
"Could you please raise your hand if you would like to participate", nearly all the girls, including Bailey and Tati, raised their hands. Except me because I really didn't know what was going on, but my decision to stay silent went down the drain when I saw the boys look around and spot me. To my complete embarassment Gabe decided to quite openly point me out by shouting "Kaycee put your hand up or I will do it for you!". Of course, now that the entire class including the professors, were looking at me I had no choice but to stick my hand up , earning a cheer from Gabe in turn causing me to laugh from behind my hand which was now covering my bright red face.
Luckilly for me the bell rang and I followed Bailey and Tati outside as we had a free period. "Wait so you know Gabe?" Tati asked for what seemed like the hundredth time. You see, as I found out her and Bailey were pretty big fans of the boys, only managing to speak to them once in the past year.
"You know, they really aren't that difficult to talk to. They are , you know ... regular I guess" I repplied casually receiving astonished looks.
"Really KC? Most girls count themselves lucky if they brush past them in the corridors, only dreaming of having a conversation with them. Then there is you who just rocks up and turn out to be friends with them." Bailey said throwing her arms up in the air, making the three of us laugh.
"I guess you will have a chance to talk to them at the auditions-" I didn't quite finish my sentence as I felt myself being picked up so fast that a gush of wind seemed to have decided to attack Tati and Bailey, who at the moment were frozen in time... and getting progressively further away. Their wide eyes, along with the eyes of the rest of the court's occupants, snapped me back to reality and made me look down at the person over whose shoulder I was thrown. Surprisingly, it turned out to be the guy who I remembered as Sean. As if on que he half yelled "Don't ask, it's a dare". I didn't exactly care because I had a fair idea of who the dare was given by, so I just went along with it.
After about a minute of running we stopped and I was part dropped and part placed on the ground, either way I ended up falling to the ground on my back side. Around me I heard a mixture of breathless laughs... aaaand someone breathing heavily above me. When I opened my eyes, I saw exactly the people I predicted it to be. Holding onto each other, laughing histerically were Gabe, Kenneth, Will and Josh while Sean stood near me, bent over while cathing his breath.
"That was amazing Sean,"exclaimed Josh getting no responce from his friend.
"Mind explaining? " I asked Sean while brushing off some dirt from my jeans. Sean only pointed to the other boys who were slowly re-gaining their composure.
"Well..." Kenneth started, awkwardly looking around at the boys, who I noticed all had guilty faces.
"I'm not mad or anything, just curious" I spoke, putting the boys visibly at ease.
"Alright" said Gabe , whiping away a tear "basically we were playing a little game of truth or dare" I raised my eyebrow at this, laughing slightly at their red faces "Okay, maybe a little more than a 'little' but beside the point, we all get tired of the girls thinking that we are like 'untouchable'" he air quoted the word"so we decided to dare Sean to pick up a girl and do a lap around the court with her" he finished, laughing a bit.
"In other words we just found a way to embarass Sean" said Josh with a shrug making the lot of us explode in laughter.
"Another question tho," at this I turbed towards Sean who finally caught his breath "why me? Out of all the 'fans' you have out here" I mimiced Gabe by air quoting fans, getting a chuckle from Sean.
"I guess, this morning you seemed pretty chill around us so I kinda thought it wouldn' t be that big of a deal for you?" He replied scratching his neck.
I thought about it for a second before swinging my arm around his shoulder, which mind you was quite a task with the height difference, and said "I guess that works for a great icebreaker". We both smiled at each other, and once again sent ourseves into a fit of laughter. Both Sean and Gabes hands ended up around my shoulders, which I didn't mind seeing as I no longer had to reach up for my hand to go around either of their shoulders. After a couple of moments I had to go seeing as I only had 5 minutes left before next lesson, so after a quick goodbye I went back to Tati and Bailey who were in the same spot but now talking to a small girl with curly hair.
"Hey guys!" I waved at the three girls who now had matching wide eyes.
"Hey, I'm Tahani" said the new girl pointing to herself. "Nice to meet you! Heard you're friends with the boys" she said pointing past me to the boys. I was prepared for another round of questions about the boys but her next words were a total surprise "With them around you will need some girlfriends too ", I smiled broadly at her and as we walked to class I worked out that she is a dancer as well and will be auditioning tomorrow. So... I guess we'll see what tomorrow holds for me!
