"Alex !" I released the breath I was holding and turned to watch my opponent. Alex was blone girl that I saw on my little run in the court yesterday. She did a dance to Formation but it was quite slow for a hip hop dance it was intended to be. When the song ended there was a polite round of applause but the looks on the boys' faces told me that they weren't too impressed either.
"Thank you Alex, now lets have..." Tricia tapped her chin, her gaze finally landing on Tahani "you!". I could feel the turning in my stomach as she went up to connect her phone to the speakers. Earlier she told us that she would be doing a dance to Bartier Cardi, so at hearing the familliar tune I prepared to cheer for my new friend.
Tahani was on fire, from her face to the moves she was flawless. I almost laughed out loud at seeing Rich's reaction to the end of the dance.
So like that the next seven girls went up, some killing it and some not so much. Charlize performed to Burn up the dance, with a slower and more flowy beat than 16 Shots, which I can only guess she preffered by the confidence in her moves. Bailey danced to Down, a song she was obsessed with. What can I say, she was in her element with the mix of sharp and smooth, she really worked it. Lastly Tati did her solo to Questions and I can't say that the girl on the floor was the same one that practically ran away when the boys wished us luck.
So after all the anxious waiting, Tricia nodded for me to find my song. With all eyes on me, even the thumbs up from the boys didn' t help to calm me down.
As soon as the first words of the sond were spoken I heard Rich yell " Yes Rice". I smiled, bouncing from foot to foot in the center of the floor... and then I began. It was as if my body uncosciously recognised the song and moved on it's own accord. Occasionally I saw peeks of people both smiling and glaring at me but I was too engrosed in the song to ponder on it.
After the last hit of my arms the chorus died down and silence filled the room. It may have been a second before the clapping started but for me it felt like years, I didn't even realise that I had joined the girls on the side until Tricia announced that her and the guys will need a moment to think, during which we could go outside.
"Kaycee that was awesome!" Exclaimed Tahani giving me a side hug that I returned in turn complementing all of their dances.
"Can't wait for the results!"
"Me neither Bails", then out of nowhere, somebody's shoulder collided with mine. We all turned with confused faces to the newcommers. They turned out to be three girls from the auditions, one being Alex.
"Og Bobby Johnson!" Alex said in a mocking voice while pulling disgusted faces at me. "Really? Why would you even join if you have such a bad music taste?" That was the last thing she said before leaving with her mates.
"Aaaaalright!" Said Tati with wide eyes, that was unexpected. I mean what does my taste in music have to do with the dance contest? Before I had a chance to think about it any longer we were called back in and asked to line up in height order. Of course I was on the end! The boys were lined up opposite us, their backs to the mirror. Gabe winked at me to which I only raised an eyebrow in question.
"Right, so girls, you were all amazing but I can only pick five of you and some I do admitt were better that others. The boys will each call out a name, if yours is not called out I would like you to return to your lessons " she gestured for the guys to start and with every second I felt my heart beating faster.
First up was Will "Congradulations to Charlize" he read from a list, handing it over to Josh. I was honestly really happy for Charlize, she just appealed to me as someone nice I guess.
"Next up is Tahani" Tahani bounced up and down at hearing her name.
Gabe continued the list "Tati Mcquay will be joining the program" I embraced Tati in a tight hug, seeing as she stood next to me.
Ken looked at the list before announcing quite nonchantly " Bailey", now 4 people were chosen with one space remaining. For a second I saw Alex throw me a smirk that I decited to ignore.
I stared at the list that Sean held, in his hands was my chance. "Now, last but not least we have....Kaycee Rice" my face was now graced with the widest smile of my life. The five of us got together in a squealing group hug while the rest left the room sulking .
"Well done girls but before we get too excited" Tricia turned to look me right in the eyes "Kaycee have you ever taken any of my classes?"
Confused I repplied "I may have."
"She has" we all looked towards Gabe who was now smiling as broadly as I was just seconds ago. "She did the Anaconda combo with you" my eyes grew wide at the mere mention of the dance.
"Perfect ! Can you do it now?" the confusion on my face must have been obvious as Tricia continued " I just want to see if you can do a mature dance when you have more conscious thoughts than your 11 year old self" a light sure escaped my mouth as everyone once again moved to the sides.
I was really scared to embarass myself but just before the music began I got a thought, 'embrace it, you are a weirdo, embarassment is not a thing'.
Now the minute of the dance was just a total fight in my mind, between my morals and conscience. The only distraction from the fact that I was doing a slightly inappropriate dance in front of my new friends, were the occasional whistles from both genders.
Like the other times I received some applause and an enormous amount of teasing from the boys. Tricia patted my shoulder and got us all to line up in front of her.
"Now that we have deffinitely made sure that we had picked the right people" a pointed look was given to me " I will explain how the program works". We all listened in as apparently the boys didn't have a clue either.
"Now, instead of lessons you will have dance practices with all kinds of choreographers, preparing pieces for competitions and jobs. You may get a chace to be in movies or commercials.
You also get prizes for completing the course and an exam at the end. Every year there is a different focus, this year it will be....partner dancing"
