I sighed contentedly, smiling as I finished my speech, graduating as valedictorian. I sat back down as the program continued, not really bothering to listen anymore. A lot had gone on in my high school years, and do I regret it? Absolutely not.
Sure, the years have gone by, but you're, surprisingly, still here. Star Butterfly; the magical princess, probably queen, from another dimension and in extension, my best friend.
It was the middle of the school year when you decided to drop into my life without a heads up or warning. Oh boy.. Safe kid Marco getting called to the principal's office; I thought I finally got into trouble! That was when I was introduced to you. You were literally biting on a water fountain as if it were some kind of beast, and looking back, I could see why you thought so.
You immediately warmed up to me, and it disturbed me at the time. You were so peppy, so bubbly, so.. You. A part of me wanted to be just like you, which is why I got so entangled in our adventures together.
"Marco, Marco, smile for the picture, honey!" I was brought out of my thoughts by my mom as I nervously grinned into what I think was where the camera was facing. I blinked as the flash of the camera overwhelmed my sight, humming. "Mom, we've taken way too many photos already.. The ceremony isn't even over yet.." I complained, hoping one of my parents would listen to me.
My dad rolled his eyes, chuckling as he slapped my back, nearly knocking me over. "Oh Marco, it's your graduation! And you're the valedictorian! We couldn't be prouder which is why we're taking so many pictures! Look, we even brought the puppies!" I looked over to the back, seeing the laser puppies making a mess. I bit my lip, nodding nervously.
"Okay, okay, but last one right now. The program's not done yet.." My parents waved goodbye as they retreated back to their seats. I shook my head slightly, chuckling from how silly they could be. The laser puppies.. Star was the one who poofed them to life right in my very household. Star was also the one who sucked my room into a hole when we first met. She was the one who drove me out of my house to become momentarily insane in a convenience store. Yet, we became best friends.
The blood moon ball... The dimension-hopping.. Stopping time.. Beating up monsters.. Getting Jackie as my girlfriend.. Song day.. Your confession.. Saving Mewni.. You were always there. Until now, you're still here. God, I remember when you confessed.. And I still remember your golden hair, your blue eyes, your heart cheeks, your smile.. It hit me, back then. When we thought we lost you. It hit me. I was in love with you.
I say was, but I probably still am. It's been years, yet I still think of you. I still think of our adventures. I still think of how many headaches you've caused me and of how many adventures you've given me. I still have the magical scissors, I could've visited you anytime. But.. I didn't. I was scared of things not being the same, and they weren't. It stunk. I never wanted to bring it up, so being myself, I never brought it up again.
I was snapped out of my thoughts when Janna tugged on my arm. I looked over to her, raising my brow.
"Dude, the ceremony's over and you spaced out.. Your mom and dad are waiting,"
She cocked her head to my mom and dad, who were trying to chase the laser puppies who went off their leash. I winced for not realizing sooner. "Oh, sorry. Hey, wait, how'd you get here? I thought you'd skip this!" I frowned, crossing my arms. She shrugged, having her signayure grin on her face. She's up to something.
"Well, I get to see my friends and I have nothing better to do.. Soo..""Janna, I'm your only friend. You creep everyone else out."
She scoffed, standing up, smiling deviously. "You dont know that," And with that she scurried off, leaving me alone. Huh.. Weird. Well, not really, this is the norm for Janna. I stood up, ready to help my parents with the puppies until I saw all of them in their arms. They looked unusually happy.
"Marco! Come on, let's get home, we have a surprise for you!" Mom squealed, hurrying up to get to the car. My dad followed worriedly, shouting after my mom to be careful. I hummed affirmatively, walking calmly to them. Seeing the sight of my two parents made me remember Star. Always head on going on our adventures, while I chased after her, telling her to be careful. I got into the car, putting my seatbelt on as I looked out the window, seeing my passing surroundings.
It's been normal for me now to think about Star and what could have been. She's probably running Mewni now, with all her destructive yet peaceful nature. She never really wanted to be queen, but I bet she's doing a great job of it now.. My heart ached longingly and God.. I really was in love with my best friend. And, I still am. Pathetic for me, but hey, I'm Marco Diaz. I chuckled to myself at the thought, allowing my heart to throb from the memories with my intergalactic princess.
I felt the car stop suddenly and I gasped, the force nearly throwing me off my seat. I looked over to my dad who was driving or to my mom who was in the front seats, but they looked ecstatic for some reason. I furrowed my brows, shaking my mom's shoulder. "Mom, why'd we stop? Why are you guys smiling?" I glanced to where their eyes were focusing on, and my eyes widened like saucers.
Blonde hair. Blue eyes. Heart cheeks. Her smile.. I blinked once, twice, thrice. My eyes had to be playing a trick on me. It couldn't be. What used to be a devil horned headband on her hair was now replaced by a crown, and her colorful array of dresses now replaced with a flowing gown. I felt my mouth go dry, I was speechless. It was Star.
I immediately got out of the car, my graduation cap nearly falling, as my. jaw dropped. She ran to me, smiling as she hugged me tight. So familiar, so warm.. Home.
"Huuugs.." She cooned, smiling. I slowly hugged back, grinning. I pulled away, my mind fuzzy from so much happening so suddenly.
"S-Star? W-What're you doing here?!" My breaths were uneven, but I could care less. She placed her hands on her hips, booping my nose with her wand.
"Well, you never visited me! And I was so busy trying to be queen, you couldn't expect me to visit! But Janna gave me a call that you guys were graduating and your parents invited me too.. I just decided I had to go! I.. I missed you, Marco." Her last statement sounded shy, as she smiled, looking down. Her hair was no longer down, but was in a bun, yet she still had that signature Star look I'd recognize anywhere. Before I gave myself the chance to overthink, I hugged her by the waist, picking her up as I smiled widely. I'm sure it was the happiest I was the whole day.. Noy from being the valedictorian, but from seeing her again. Her forehead rested on mine, and I wouldn't even care if my parents were taking a thousand pictures. She's here."You look.. amazing."
