Twenty-eight

It had been a few weeks since Ms. Delabruere had made clear she was pulling the strings.

"I got a D, Al. I can't believe I'm failing Alchemy & Transfiguration."

"I know, me too. I heard he did that to the whole class."

We were walking outside when I saw Ms. Delabruere standing in front of her window.

"I should probably talk to Ms. D. She must have noticed my grade by now."

"Good luck with that. I'm heading to Necromancy. I'll see you tonight."

I heard Ms. Delabruere speaking to someone so I waited outside her office.

It didn't take long before I heard her say my name and the door was open.

"Ms. D, I need to speak with you."

"Miss Lamberts, can you tell me the seven stages of transformation?"

I stuttered, "u-um.."

"The Emerald tablet, anything?"

"I- um."

"Clearly haven't been paying much attention in class", she sighed. "What about physical changes?"

I used a spell I remembered which made her fingers look like claws.

"Not too bad", she shook her hand and it became normal again.

"It's a good thing you came to me. Make sure you know your spells. Tomorrow night, we're going to practice them."

I nodded. "Yes ma'am. I will."

24 hours later

"I want you to change these people's physical form. They are attacking you. What do you do?" Ms. D was walking behind me, watching my every move which freaked me out.

There were ten people standing in line, one by one trying to attack me.

After I'd changed them all into little mouses, she walked over to me.

"Now it's not human, now you're dealing with a witch. What is important?"

"It needs to be done correct and faster." I remembered.

"That's right. Now try to turn me."

I tried several times to change her but it didn't work. Every time she blocked my spell, giving me no chance to extract a spell.

"You're taking too long. You'll need to decide faster."

I quickly attacked her with a couple of different spells one by one. It took me a few before I finally succeeded.

"This is better. Again."

We'd been training for what felt like hours. She was now attacking me with transformation spells.

I accidentally didn't notice another one coming and that made me change into werewolf form.

She looked at me, as I turned my back on her and changed back into a witch.

"In a battle, I could've killed you", she said.

I sighed. "I know."

"You'll be following extra classes this week. And by the end of the week, I don't want to be able to beat you again."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Now go to bed. I sometimes forget you need your sleep. I'll see you in the morning."
