everett

"hello, mrs. brecks. i'm derek—"

"hello. call me vera," his mother says curtly, then breaks out into a smile at the bouquet of peonies. "you sure know how to dazzle a girl."

"thank you." he's too nervous to say something witty. "and thank you for inviting me. it's an honor to meet you."

"come in," she ushers, and everett smiles at this, at the fact that he isn't alone and that he has a mother that pushed her personal beliefs aside to come to terms with new ones.
