"hey, man," he says, shaking atília's hand. "it's nice to finally meet the guy i'll be sharing a dorm room with."

the other boy returns the gesture, but is clearly agitated. "likewise. do you want something to drink?"

"nah, thanks. i'm good." he's extremely jittery, palms becoming clammy and shaky. "any new year's resolutions?"

a pause, then, "no. i have not really celebrated the new year before. how about you?"

"same here."

atília's face hardens. he lets out a quiet sigh and nods his head in a sign of politeness. "if you will excuse me, i have to use the restroom."

he shoves his hands into his pockets and takes a deep breath.
