Hiccup had heard his friends names' being called and had watched them all go and sit at the Gryffindor table and had seen Astrid give him a thumbs-up and smile, and had read the words formed on her lips, "You'll be in Gryffindor. I know you will!" But he was still scared and nervous. It seemed that he would never be called. Then he heard his name. Finally it was his turn to be Sorted! He practically ran all the way up to the Hat and put it on. Then he thought, "Gryffindor. Gryffindor. Put me in Gryffindor." Then, all of a sudden, he heard the Hat call out "Gryffindor!" to the Hall. He jumped to his feet and pulled off the Hat. Then he walked over to the Gryffindor table and sat down next to Astrid.

She whispered in his ear, "I told you that you would be in Gryffindor."

"Actually, you mouthed it to me." Hiccup replied, laughing. It felt good to laugh. He didn't know when he'd last laughed that hard. Probably not ever before.
