"Why did you come with me again?" You asked your coworker and friend, Tsurugi. You two were walking to your sister's house, Yumi was supposed to be with you, but Tsurugi came instead.
"Well..." Tsurugi began. "Yumi told me to go help you because he was busy today. He didn't tell me why you needed help, but he said he would pay me if I did, so here I am!"
"Oh," You realize. "I'm babysitting my nephew." Tsurugi stopped in his tracks, you turned to look at him.
"Tsurugi, is something wrong?" You questioned, he had an anxious look in his eyes.
"Um..." Tsurugi faltered. "I'm out." He tried to walk away, but you grabbed the back of his collar, preventing him from scurrying away.
"No. No. No." Tsurugi repeated as you dragged him forward.
"Tsurugi, babysitting for four hours isn't that bad," You assure him. "You'll be fine."
"That's not what I'm worried about!"
---
Even though Tsurugi protested, you were finally able to get him to your sister's house. Your sister was happy to see you, you introduced Tsurugi to her, who looked like a nervous wreck. She went over simple things like food or what time he's supposed to be asleep, assuring her you knew what to do. You bid her goodbye, waving to her as you shut the door of her house.
Your nephew, Evan, was sitting on a blanket in the middle of the floor, playing with blocks with letters on the side of them. Tsurugi sat away from him, sitting on the side of the couch far away from the child. He looked scared, Evan took notice of him, the baby smiled and waved at him. Tsurugi didn't move, it appeared to only make him more nervous. You picked up your nephew and sat next to your friend, he tried to inch away, but Tsurugi was already at the very edge of the couch.
"Do you want to hold him?" You ask, Tsurugi frantically shakes his head. "Evan's a baby, he doesn't bite... Yet."
"You can't do that," He tells you. "(Y/N), he'll die if he gets close to me!"
"No, he won't." You assured him, he shook his head.
"Yes, he will!" Tsurugi answered. "Everything that gets close to me dies, and it's no different for him!" Evan started crying, big drops of tears spilling from his eyes.
"See! Everything goes wrong when I'm around!" Tsurugi repeated, you comforted the child until he calmed down.
"Oh, stop being dramatic," You tell him. You sit the child on Tsurugi's knee, the man looking terrified as Evan stares up at him with a curious gaze. Tsurugi was completely still, his widened-eyes locked on the child, Evan chortled happily, his mouth curved up in a joyful smile.
"He's... Laughing...?" Tsurugi thinks out loud, a tear rolled down his cheek, you put a hand on his shoulder.
"Tsurugi," You addressed him. "Are you okay?" Tsurugi wiped his eyes with his sleeve and awkwardly chuckled.
"Sorry," He apologized as Evan stood up on his leg and pulled on his hair lightly. He turned his head, fixing his golden gaze on you."Did I scare you?"
"No," You replied honestly. "I don't understand why you think everything bad that happens is because of you."
"It's always been like that, (N/N)," Tsurugi began. "Bad luck just follows me everywhere, everyone I care about gets caught up in it..."
"That's not true," You demurred. "I don't think it was bad luck that I met you. You may not think it, but you are a great person, flawed, but a great person. You make me genuinely happy, you make me laugh and you mean a lot to me, but for once..." You placed your palm on the top of his hand. "I want to give you the chance to smile."

Eventually, your sister came back and thanked you for watching Evan. She bid you and Tsurugi good night, her son cradled in her arms. You and Tsurugi were strolling back to C3, there were no words exchanged between you two. But, Tsurugi stopped in his tracks, you turn to tell him to continue walking back, but him pecking you on the cheek left you speechless. You pulled a hand up to your cheek, you feel the heat radiating from it.
"That was my thank you gift." Tsurugi chirped as he grinned playfully, you wanted to say something, but you were at a loss for words.
"So... Did you mean it?" Tsurugi asked.
"M-Mean what?" You stutter.
"Did you really mean it when you said you wanted me to be happy?" He clarified.
"Yes, I did." You answer. "I promise."
"Okay, then, you owe me seventy bucks for helping you babysit!" He teases, your eyebrow twitches.
"No way," You told him in a surly tone.
"Hey, I was kidding!" He admitted, but, after a moment, his face went soft. "... But, I want to make you happy, too, (N/N)... I guess what I'm trying to say is..." He struggled to think of the words. "Thank you... What you said... Means a lot to me." Your eyes widen, you never expected to hear those words come out of Tsurugi Kamiya's mouth. For all the time you've known him, you've never seen such a sincere and honest look in his eyes. It was always hard to tell what he was thinking, but now, he was like an open book, free for you to read.
"Seeing you happy makes me happy." You beamed. "And I hope it makes you happy to know I love you." Tsurugi's eyes widened, his lips turned up into a smile, he walks over to you and wraps his arms around you, you could feel his hammering against his chest.
"I'm glad you feel the same." He admits. "I love you, too."
