Was falling in love really worth it...? Sakuya thought as he coughed up blood and flower petals. He felt his dry throat cough up more petals painted with blood, he turns on the faucet and watched as they swish down the drain. This is what happened when vampires loved someone who didn't fall in love with them, they would cough up blood and flower petals, and it is very painful. That's all he felt. Pain. And it all started when he fell in love with you.

When Sakuya met Mahiru, he introduced him to all of his friends, and you were the first.
"Hello, it's nice to meet you," You greeted him. "I'm (Y/N) (L/N)."
"Sakuya Watanuki," He told you, he looked at you with curiosity. He thought you were pretty, with those captivating eyes. They were filled with nothing but wonder, and he took note of that as he started to get to know you. He would always playfully tease you, your reactions always made him smile.
"So, Mahiru," You asked the brunette as you and the rest of the friend group walked home from school. "Do you need help with making the costumes for the festival? I feel kind of bad letting you do it since you have to bake and all..."
"Aw, look, (Y/N) is being Mahiru's mom." Sakuya teased, your face turned pink and you punch him lightly in the shoulder.
Mahiru shakes his head. "No, I'm alright, speaking simply, I'm the only one who knows how to sow."
"I know how to sow!" You told him.
"You asked me how to thread a needle this morning." Mahiru recalls, you stopped talking.
"It's so cute how (Y/N) is always trying to help you, Mahiru," Sakuya stated. "Maybe she likes you!" You pull Sakuya's hair, blushing madly.
"N-No! That's not it at all!" You stutter with embarrassment.
"Ow! Let go!" Sakuya whined, you unhand his gravity-defying, green hair.
"Come on, Sakuya," Mahiru began. "(Y/N) and I have been friends since we were little, I don't think she'd fall for me." Sakuya had always had a hunch you had a crush on Mahiru, but he never thought it would be true.

He never planned on falling in love with you, but he did. He thought about you all the time, he even wrote your name on one of his tests once. But, he told himself not to get too close, because he knew that you might be caught up in the war between Tsubaki and the Servamps... He also knew what would happen if you didn't love him back. But, he couldn't resist the feeling... That one sweet, yet sickening feeling from making his heart swell.
He remembers all of this as he constantly coughs up blood and flower petals in the bathroom, hoping that Tsubaki and the other subclasses wouldn't hear his coughing. He didn't want to worry them with his personal issues. He couldn't help but remember that day... They first day his suffering started.
"Hey, Sakuya," You addressed as you walked to the station together. "Can I tell you something?"
"Sure," Sakuya told you. "I can keep a secret."
"Please, don't tell anyone, but..." You struggled to find the words. "I... I like Mahiru." Sakuya felt his heart sink down into stomach like an anchor. He liked you, very much, he'd hoped you'd feel the same.
"Oh, you do?" Sakuya replied. "Why are you telling me?"
"Because I trust you," You answered. "And... I want to tell Mahiru, it's harder than I thought it would be. I thought you would be the best person to ask about this... Will you help me?" Sakuya paused for a moment, should he help? He wanted to tell you, he wanted to say three simple words... But he couldn't. Even though he wanted you to love him, too, there was one thing he wanted more than that: he wanted you to be happy.
"Sure, I'll help you." He agreed. You were happy and relieved, but he felt like he was being crushed on the inside.
And that's when it started, that night, when he came from school, he started coughing. It became worse after a few seconds, was there something in his throat? What was it? He eventually coughed up whatever he was choking on and was surprized to see something he never expected to be lodged in his throat.
Are these... He thought. Flower petals...?
All through out the week, Sakuya would constantly give opportunities for you and Mahiru to be alone together so you could confess, much to his dismay. He would also drop hints to Mahiru, who was completely oblivious, which irritated Sakuya. He wanted his friend to know how much you cared about him. But, eventually Sakuya was suprised when Mahiru told him something that made the problem bigger.
"Hey, Sakuya," Mahiru said. "I like (Y/N), and I want to confess to her." Sakuya's eyes widened when he heard those words. He didn't expect to hear them from Mahiru, of all people.
"Don't worry, pal!" Sakuya assured. "I'll be your wingman! I'll help you fly into her heart."
"... Sakuya." Said Mahiru.
"Yes?"
"If you're gonna' be my 'wingman', don't make terrible puns." Mahiru requested, Sakuya chuckled fakely at his friend's response. He started coughing lightly, but it immediately started to become worse.
"Sakuya, are you okay?" Mahiru asked. "You've been coughing alot, lately."
"Oh, I'm fine!" He lied, wiping away the blood on his lip so Mahiru wouldn't see it. "It's just allergies!" Sakuya quickly walked away from Mahiru and rushed into the boy's bathroom. He started choking on the petals rising in his throat, he painfully hacked them up, washing all of it down the drain. He looked at himself in the mirror and was disgusted at how pitiful he looked.
You're a vampire, for Pete's sake, He thought, wiping away the blood. Pull yourself together.
He wanted the two people who meant a lot to him to be happy, but at the same time... He wanted to be happy. But to be happy, he had to make Mahiru unhappy, because he liked you, too. Is it all selfish?
✳✳✳
Eventually, Mahiru asked you out with Sakuya's help, you joyfully agreed to go on a date with him. After that, you two became a couple. You were happy. And that's all Sakuya wanted...
But saying that would be a lie. Sakuya was satisfied seeing you happy, but in the end, it left him alone and sad. He wished he was Mahiru, he wished he could make you smile like he does. But he was not the one.
And now, he went through all kinds of trouble because he fell in love. He felt like he was punched in the stomach when you told him you loved his best friend, and now he was feeling pain knowing you wouldn't return his affection.
The pure white petals were speckled with blood. The sight of them made him sick, he quickly washed them down the drain, wishing he could wash away the heartache of unrequited love with them.
