The rains name is Wendy, but I'm the only one who knows that. I'm the one who named her. I would feel stupid telling anyone the rains name because they would just think I was a delusional wacky child with a big imagination. In fact, I was a delusional wacky child with a big imagination. That's why I know the rains name.
When I was little, I would always open the window to my room when It rained, Especially when it felt like the clouds were trying to wash humanity away, and start over. I would pull up a chair and watch for hours as the drips fell, maybe even longer if there was a thunderstorm. Sometimes I'd even go out on the porch, I'd sit under the roofed area with my mother as torrents fell down. We'd wrap ourselves in blankets and cherish the moments. When I was in my room with the window open, the door would open and close. I later found out that was because I had a very drafty room, but while I didn't know that, I thought It was the ghost of my dad's neighbor Wendy. One day We found an old doll with the hair nearly all cut off and an old dress in a mud puddle on the side of the road near Wendy's house. It was after a big rainstorm. Wendy was hit by a car and died when she was young, as I've been told. It was the biggest news in town, but of course it was, we lived in a place where nothing happened and back when my dad was a kid even more nothing happened. He took the doll home with him and my mother cleaned it up, and then It got passed on to me. This doll had to be at least 60 years old, and it was still dressed in its clothing from that time. Historically preserved in the mud for so long, and finally it had been uncovered. I wasn't a big fan of dolls, so it sat up in my attic. The attic was right above my room. Whenever the door opened and closed, I thought it was the ghost of the little girl Wendy. I didn't mind her, although sometimes she scared me. More than once the door slammed shut as thunder boomed. After that I would close the window, I had enough of Wendy for the time being on those occasions. I miss Wendy in these winter months. It's just snow upon snow. The snow doesn't have a name, neither did I want it to.
In the morning I woke up wrapped in a lot of blankets.Almost a cocoon that encased both Addy and I as we slept. I pried my way out of there. I was wide awake already, which was a bit odd. I checked the time. 6:37. My god why am I awake? I asked myself. I wasn't mad though, waking up early means you have more time in the day to do whatever you want. The mornings are nice too, the world was silent and tranquil as the snow covered everything in a few inches of itself. It almost felt muted, like you could scream and only a whisper would come out. It made your head feel clogged with imaginary cotton balls stuffed in your ears. Even the vastness of the apartment with its high ceiling felt small and quiet. I didn't mind it though, it was just a little weird of a sensation. It reminded me of those padded rooms for crazy people in the movies with straight jackets on. I feel like it would be like that.
I walked around the apartment. It almost felt unfamiliar with how much we had been gone, yet it still felt so familiar at the same time. I quietly walked around. Looking closely at every detail of the apartment. The linoleum flooring in the kitchenette, the marble counter, the pigeon blue seats of the stools next to the island table. The grey L-shaped couch with the light brown coffee table in the center, which was on top of a light grey rug that had been purchased from ikea. The TV on top of the TV stand. The lamp that nearly stood as tall as me near the window I like to sit in.
About a half hour later Addy and Carter woke up, I was excited because last night Addy promised me we'd set up the record player as soon as breakfast was over. I couldn't wait to hear the sounds of Pretty Odd, playing right there on vinyl in our apartment. My imagination ran as wild as it did when I came to the conclusion that the only reasonable cause for my door moving without anyone touching it was a ghost named Wendy as I thought about all the vinyls we'd get and play. How awesome I'd be to go record shopping like it was the 1980's. Abbey Road was definitely up there on the list of must haves, along with many others.
