I was eating some jello for breakfast, and Doctor Chris walks into the room. I finish my bite of jello and speak up.
"Hey." I greet him with a smile.
"Hi McKenna. You know about the Make-A-Wish program right?"
"Yeah. Do I get a wish?" I ask getting excited.
"Yes, you do. Only one. And I strongly recommend not going to DisneyLand or Disney World. I know that the Grim Reaper is staring you in the face, but think about it."
"Well I've always wanted to go to Hawaii..." I shrug taking another bite of jello.
"That's a good one. I'll talk with the Genies, and see if that is possible. Your tumor is getting smaller, but we can't plan into the future."
"Okay. Can I take a few friends or..?"
"The Genies pay for the patient and the parent or parents. The friends will have to pay separately."
"Okay"
"And your next radiation therapy will be at noon today." Then he left the room. I want to take Jake, Brooke, and Leslee to Hawaii if I even go.
I picked up my phone, and went to call. My thumb hovered above the contact name. I finally clicked it, the phone dialed.
"Leave a message after the tone.. Beep"
The voice instructed."Hey mom, it's McKenna. It's 2014, November 9th. It's almost my birthday, um, and I just wanted to say hi. And wanted to let you know, that..."-pause-"I have a brain tumor." -I started to cry at that point-"it's pretty large, and deep inside. The doctors only got the top of it. Which was half a centimeter. It's pretty deep. I love you mom. I'll see you soon."
I knew I was going to eventually die in the next 4 months. I knew radiation wasn't working, I knew the tumor was large. I could see it in the doctor's faces. They knew I was going to die. Everyone knew it. I could see in the eyes of my peers. Of Jake, of Brooke and Leslee.
I jumped out of the bed, and decided to walk. Down to the waiting room, up to the ICU, although I couldn't go in. I went back down to the waiting room, and a little girl was waiting with her mom.
"Mommy, what happened to her head?" She asked pointing at me.
"Kaylah! Don't be rude!" Her mom scolded.
"No, it's okay. Um." -I walked towards her- "I had to have surgery done on my brain."
"Oh. What's that wire stuff on your head?"
"It's where they cut my head open."
"Ew" she giggled.
"Yeah I know pretty gross right?"
She nodded her head while chuckling a little. I looked at my hand, noticing I carried the bubbles with me.
"Here. Have some bubbles." I said handing Kaylah the bubbles Brooke gave me.
"Thank you!" She giggled again taking the bubbles. Then I left up to the room, joyful that I did a good deed. I gave a little girl something to do. It felt great. Then Jasmine walked into the room with a basket full of toys and gift cards.
"Hey. Do you want a toy or gift card?" She asked holding out the basket.
"Can I help you pass them out?"
"Yeah. Sure."
*one week later*
I was soooo bored. I was already half way through This Star Won't Go Out. But luckily, today I went home. Finally. And before I went home, I was going to be told wether or not my Wish was going to be granted.
I threw on a beanie, a thin teal sweater, leggings, and my slippers. Then Doctor Chris walked into the room. Like always, he started with saying 'hi' or 'hey'.
"So did I get my Wish granted?" I was so eager to know. I bet I did.
"Yes it did. Your dad approved of the dates, your healthy enough, but you aren't completely healthy. You know. And you are leaving for Hawaii next week!" He was so happy.
"What about my friends? I want them to come. Everyone knows I'm dying, and I want to spend my last days with them." I said sternly. I did want Brooke Leslee and Jake to come. I really did.
"Well, the Genies thought about it. They said they would. Now don't take it for granted, they rarely do this." Chris said smiling. "I'll see you later, chap." He always called me 'chap'. Then Jasmine appeared through the curtains.
"Hey." She smiled. We all said our goodbyes, and I headed out the doors. Headed home, where everything was how it was supposed to be
