By the time we got to the hospital, I was crying. The paramedics lifted me out of the ambulance, rolled me into the hospital, and started talking to the doctors.
"Friends say it started with a headache. And while she was in the kitchen, she fell screaming." One said. I saw the man in the white coat glance at me.
"I think I know what it is. Schedule a MRI for her..." I started to fall asleep, all the sound drowning out. Voices got faint, I stopped crying, and the lights in the hall got darker.
*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*
"Just what I thought." Voices came back to life as I awoke. I looked around to see IV fluids dripping, monitors beeping, and me in a hospital gown. I moaned to alarm the doctors I was awake.
"McKenna, so glad you're awake. You blacked out for an hour. I'm Doctor Chris. There is bad news-"
I cut him off, "and good news right?"
"Not really. Ms. Walker, I'm afraid you have a pretty large brain tumor. There is an 75% chance you'll live for another five years."
My heart sunk into my stomach. "How long has it been there" I stared at the table next to my bed.
"At least two months. It's about four centimeters in diameter." I just sighed. The curtain opened and Doctor Chris left. A nurse stayed in the room with me.
"I'm nurse Jasmine. But just call me Jasmine. No 'nurse' included." Jasmine smiled and took a seat on my bed. "Your dad got stuck in a court case. He ran a little late so he'll be here in fifteen minutes."
"Okay." I sighed. "My head hurts Jasmine."
"Yeah?"
I nodded my head. Doctor Chis entered the room with Brooke and Leslee, and Jasmine left with Doctor Chris.
"Hey." Brooke said giving a little wave.
"Hey" I chuckled.
"Are you okay?" They took a seat on the end of my bed.
"I want to believe I'm okay but I know I'm not."
"I wish I could poof it away. But cancer is stubborn." Leslee started crying along with Brooke.
"Guys, I'm going to live for a long time. Don't worry." Then I started crying, from a mixture if emotions and my head hurting.
I saw someone peek from the curtains and open them. Jake's face appeared. Brooke and Leslee disappeared from the room as well.
"Hi Jake" I smiled. That's all I really needed, Jake.
"Hey Kenna. I heard the news and I rushed over. Are you okay?"
"I'm feeling better." I took a sip of my water I had.
Jake kissed me on the forehead, "I have to go. I got five minutes in here. I'll be here all night if I have to. I love you."
"I love you too." I whispered as he left. My dad came in for about ten minutes. Chris, dad, and I went over our options. Either chemotherapy for a year or more, or surgery.
"What do you want to do McKenna? If we do the surgery, there might be a chance of memory loss or speech problems. It's a fifty-fifty chance of damage or not."
"Surgery." I said immediately. My dad sighed. Chris told Jasmine to get me prepped and ready. Everyone except Jasmine left the room.
"You know, I have to shave your head, right?" Jasmine said getting the air mask out and hooked up to the machine.
"Yeah. I'm not afraid to do it. I've done it for my mom, I can do it now." Jasmine smiled. She pulled out the buzz cutter and plugged it in. Bzzzzzzzz buzzzzzzz. Locks of my hair fell to the ground, leaving my head cold. I took some anesthesia and lay on the stretcher. Jasmine handed me the mask, and I put it over my head.
"Doctor Chris!" She called letting him know I was all ready to go. Sound drifted out again, I fell asleep slowly, then all at once.
