Alice Ainsworth was looking forward to this day for weeks. Not only because she will be one of the background dancers for the famous idol, Cher, but her favorite band Queen was performing at the event as well. The year was 1979 and the event was to be held in Hyde Park.
The days were long, they've had indoor practices but this time they have to do it on stage at the venue. Halfway through the dance routine with Cher's Those Shoes music blaring through the speakers, Alice heard thunder echoing amid the backstage area. It was the roar of a helicopter, someone important must have arrived. It was the end of the routine and Alice was lying on the floor of the stage, very much aware of the dirty floors but she and the other dancers were completely exhausted to care.
Rehearsals were done without Cher at the time, as she preferred to do her rehearsals in the hotel ballroom at The Dorchester where she was staying, where it was air-conditioned. The choreographer, Jake, made them practice the choreography about seven times, they even took some time from the Queen slot but luckily for them the band was late for their soundcheck. Queen's backstage crew proceed to set up the instruments regardless not complaining due to all the eye candies they get to stare while setting up the instruments.
Reflected in the polished surface of Freddie Mercury's piano, Alice stood in awe. Alice has Pan-Asian features, she was neither short, nor tall. Her hair is an iridescent black, always messy and put into her signature-tousled bun. Her big brown eyes looked wide and honest. In the next instant her clear-skinned, anxious face was replaced. You could tell she was lurking unnecessarily on stage, as if she was searching for someone. Jake glanced at Alice to leave the stage with him, knowing very well she wanted to catch a glimpse of the band.
Suddenly a pack of massive men like a charging rugby team emerged from the backstage area. Forced to step aside, Alice could not help but to crane her neck to see whom they were protecting. It was Queen. Alice felt herself having heart palpitations when she saw Freddie in a regular fit white singlet with a pair of green trousers. She saw a blurry silhouette of Brian and his bobbly curly hair but did not catch John or Roger.
Jake looked at her friend up and down, shaking his head. "Aren't you the happiest girl in the world," he made a remark. Alice grinned back to him her mouth still agape. The damage is done, Jake thought to himself.
