"Well I did a bit of jazz drumming growing up. It wasn't hardcore or anything," Alice explained looking around the Sex Pistols studio. The studio was empty except for an assistant engineer, who was asleep on the couch.
Sid played a song they had mixed earlier and Alice nodded her head to the beat, not impressed but tried to be polite anyway. He then invited her into the recording room, showing her around and eventually stopping at his bass. It was much smaller than Queen's studio and had an interesting lingering smell, she assumed it was from the cigarette smoke.
"So you have no prior bass experience," Sid asked putting the bass strap on Alice. Sid had heard of Alice before, party goers mentioned randomly about Mercury settling into a relationship. But he never thought she was gorgeously average in the flesh. Her big brown eyes, her doll-like eyelashes and her pulpy peachy lips. She was charming, more so in her revealing black dress.
"I'm shit on bass too, I'm a better drummer." He insists removing a strand of her hair that was stuck underneath the bass strap by her right shoulder. She jerked back and tucked her hair out from the strap herself.
"Okay Sid, teach me a chord then." She mumbled, placing her hand awkwardly on the neck of the bass.
"Right so you put your index fingers here---" Sid thought of teaching her the E chord. "And your middle finger here and the ring finger right about--- Here." He picked up each of her finger gently, making sure its where it should be.
"Right..." Alice muttered, her eyes focused on the fret board. She could feel her fingers straining to be where they should be.
"Yeah, that's great." Sid held to the neck of the bass, to help support the weight. "And then you just pluck, pluck, pluck." He bit his lip looking at her, up close she was more beautiful under the lights of the studio. It had less to do with her appearance and more to how she was. It wasn't just her glistening milky skin but it was more of the casual way she swiped a loose strand of hair, the effortless way she held herself.
"Like this?" Alice glanced up to him, her eyes plucking the bass carefully. "Pluck. Pluck. Pluck." She chanted awkwardly.
A smile formed on his face, "Yeah, but faster. You don't have to be too careful." Sid wet his lip, Alice was distractingly gorgeous. Her cute manner made his heart fluttered, it made him wanted to stop her and go You know you're gorgeous right, and you definitely can do better than Dandy Mercury.
"Right... Of course..." she found herself blushing and started to pick up the pace. He tried to detect a note of teasing from Alice, but could not tell anything in her tone.
"Okay now you're too fast," Sid replied. She could not help but to laugh as well, Sid was awkwardly charming, tall and attractive. She went into the studio thinking it would be a great story to tell Isabelle later but now she understood the charm factor that is Sid Vicious. He had the bad-boy villain vibe – the kind where all girls wish to tame.
A loud thud was heard, Sid looked up to the control room and through the glass he could see Freddie barging in, his face frantic. A wicked smile formed on his face, he looked back to Alice who was oblivious of what was happening as her back was facing the control room. She was still focused on getting her fingers on the right position at the fret of the bass.
"You see, the trick to not strain your fingers when you go for the chord is to ensure---" he paused, glancing back to Freddie who noticed them now. He then positioned himself directly behind Alice, so his groin would deliberately be behind her back. He stepped closer so he could wrap his arm around Alice, she was naively oblivious to what Sid was attempting.
"Maybe I'll just take this off so you can show me---" she blurted out, lifting the strap off her shoulder.
"No, its fine dear..." he insisted pushing himself closer to Alice.
"Stop please," Alice muttered turning her body around, she felt uncomfortable. More so his breath stink of cigarette.
The door burst open and Freddie walked in, his face red and his hand turtled into a fist. Both Sid and Alice looked to him, Sid sneered at Freddie while Alice looked back stunned.
"Freddie I was just---"
Freddie swiftly walked to Alice and seized the bass off her, "You can take this away Sid." He pushed the bass roughly to Sid then grabbed Alice by the arm and pulled her out the studio.
"Babe I was just---" she whimpered, trying to loosen his grip on her arm.
"Hello Mercury, why so angry?" Sid let out a snide remark. Freddie stopped by his tracks, tugged Alice to his side and turned around to face Sid.
He walked to him and grabbed him by the lapels of his leather jacket. "If your drug-ridden hands ever touch her again, I swear---" Freddie struggled to finish his sentence.
"You would what---?" Sid teased back leaning his face inches to Freddie's.
"Stop it you two," Alice stood in the middle, raising her arms up.
Freddie looked down to Alice, fuming. He then dragged her out of the studio. The whole time Brian was at the doorway, as if on standby if things got physical between the two men. Roger and John merely looked through the glass, munching on their pizza, transfixed with the drama that transpired.
As the band left through the narrow hallway Sid yelled, "Alice you can do better love, just saying."
