Even after Freddie decided to cut off any contact with Paul Prenter, the leech still lingered around Garden Lodge, a ghostly figure in his leather jacket leaning against the wall. Once, Alice had returned from the playground area with Elle in her arms to find Paul lying drunk at the entrance, groggy with a vodka bottle in his hand.
Paul being stubborn still attempted to contact Freddie. He would send Freddie some notes in the letter box, begging for money and a place to stay but protective Phoebe made sure to tossed them away before it got to Freddie. Alice would be curious enough to go through the trash and retrieve and read it, and it would be the same thing all over: Paul would use the sympathy card. It was evident in these letters that despite knowing he was being taken advantage of, Freddie's empathy would get the best of him and he'd end up giving his riches away.
On one weekend, coming down the stairs from putting Elle into her afternoon nap, Alice heard voices by the door. As she reached the bottom of the stairs, she overheard Freddie exchanging whispers as he hustled Paul-fucking-Prenter hurriedly to exit the door.
"Thank you so much Fred, I--- I won't bother you and your family anymore, I swear." Paul whispered, barely.
"Okay. Just leave please," Freddie muttered, pushing Paul away then shutting it close with his back. Just as he turned around, he was greeted by Alice's figure standing at the bottom of the stairs with her mouth dropped open, stunned, betrayed in her emotions and her hands on her hips with furrowed eyebrows.
"You fucking idiot!" she started walking away across the corridor, shaking her head in disbelief.
"Wait! Al, wait." Freddie ran after her. "I can explain."
"I doubt that," she mumbled moving forward into the kitchen.
"Alice, I know what it looked like---" Freddie tried to lunge and grab her flailing arms.
"You bring Paul into our home, our fucking home---"
"No. No no, he invited himself into our home." Freddie stood directly in front of her to stop her on her tracks.
Alice crossed her arms and leaned backwards, "Is that supposed to make this better?"
"No listen Al, I was trying to reason with him. To leave us alon---" Freddie tried to reason.
"No! It is not about him. Its about you, you need to leave!"
Stunned, Freddie wet his lips in disbelief at her statement. A pause then he tried to reason again, "If you would just let me talk, and explain---"
"I don't care what you have to say Fred! Don't you understand? Get out!" she yelled shoving him on the chest.
"You are impossible! Do you know that?" Freddie uttered his eyes round, losing his temper.
"Well I'm sorry I have offended you. But if you can't leave Paul, you might as well fuck off and live with him." Alice tried to side stepped and leave him.
"Here's your problem Alice. You ice people out! You always have," Freddie grabbed her by the arms. "You never give me a chance to explain myself, its you who is always right."
"Ice people out?" Have you met yourself?" Alice asked him back her forehead winkled.
"He came here for money, I rejected him. He then forced himself into the house, just when you walked down from the stairs." Freddie quickly explained himself. "And so I chose to help him, and still be with you because I love you, because we love each other."
"What the fuck?" Alice muttered confused. "You fucking suck at apologies."
Losing his temper, "Fuck's sake Al. Its always you who is right, you never want to hear me out."
