Piper
"The gate," Hazel whispered before rushing towards the beautifully engraved wall.
Well, actually, huge stone block; calling that thing a wall is a bit of a stretch.
The rest of us scrambled after her, as if we didn't just scale the side of a cliff, without any safety gear whatsoever.
I'd like to see Bear Grylls try that.
Anyways, the block of stone was engraved with pictures and symbols in a weird ancient formal, that I didn't recognise. As well as, images entailing all the ancient myths about our parents and human origin stories.
"If this is the supposed 'gate'," Reyna started. "Hoe are we suppose to get in?"
I turned to Hazel, expecting an answer to Reyna's very valuable question but Hazel wasn't even listening. Instead, she was muttering something to herself quietly.
I could tell that she was trying to figure out what the symbols and myths were for and they're significance.
Turning to Frank, who was downing a bottle of water, I said. "I'm going to help her, figure out how to open the gate. Stay here and make sure those tropical giants things didn't follow us."
He swallowed and raised his eyebrows. "Ok, don't let her get to worked up about it, though."
I nodded and stole a glance of Reyna and Mata, who were both laying on a fallen tree, before moving to Hazel's side.
Mata and Reyna we so weirdly made for each other. It's like they almost always end up being star crossed.
And that never ends well.
I pushed that thought to the back of my mind as I stood next to an analytical Hazel.
I totally assumed that since Hazel was focused on trying to open the gate, she wouldn't notice me.
Boy, was I wrong!
"Prometheus stole fire and gave it to humans, causing Zeus and the other Gods to create Pandora and her box, right?" she enquired as soon as I'd stood beside her.
"Um...yeah?" I reply, not really following.
Hazel turned toward stone wall again but started to tap specific things on the wall, gently. Each time she did so, a small crack would form in the rock.
She seemed to know exactly what she was doing until she stopped abruptly. There was only a little space left to open on the top.
"What wrong?" I asked, studying her facial expression.
She was frustrated.
"To open the gate, you need to identify the important objects and people form the myth of Pandora's box in chronological order, Except I can't find the frickin' box!"
Hazel threw her arms up, behind her head and began to pace around.
"How'd you know to do that?"
She simply looked up at me and pointed to the small boulder that had instructions craved into it.
Oh.
I nodded (a wee bit embarrassed), trying to think back to Greek mythology and Pandora's box.
We both stood there racking our brains, before Hazel let out a huge sigh ,cursing under her breath.
And that's when it hit me.
"Hazel, Pandora wasn't given a box. It was a mistranslated from Greek to English," I exclaimed, dragging her back to the wall. "It was a Pithos. That's why there's no box because it wasn't even right, in the first place."
Hazel's eyes widened as she realised I was right.
"Thanks Piper!" She squealed, before scanning the wall for a jar and eventually finding it. She grazed her finger over it softly. The remaining segment of the wall cracked open, revealing a long dark alleyway.
Great, I thought, staring into the absolute pitch darkness.
"Guys!" Hazel yelled back to the others. "We figured it out, come on!"
At first we didn't receive a response, until we started to hear quick foot steps, almost like running, heading our direction. Followed by layer heavier footsteps, we also headed to toward us.
We couldn't see anything or anyone due to the overgrowth, so Hazel called out to them again.
This time around we saw Frank with Reyna and Mata, who were close behind, bounding towards.
"That's great and all, babe! BUT THE TROPICAL GIANTS ARE KINDA AFTER US... AGAIN!".
× × ×
Luckily for us, the wall closed behind us immediately after we'd all managed to leap into the maze.
It was almost like the maze had a mind of its own. Like it knew when exactly to seal the wall, so we'd all male it inside safely but all of the giants would just barging into the now closed wall.
Maybe I'm reading into too much, I thought, moving away from wall and towards the others, who'd already made a head start down the maze.
Mata must have something with her hands, as they produced a dark purple flickering light, that illuminated the rest of the long, winding corridor.
I turned to Hazel, waiting our next instructions. She wasn't even paying attention to us, instead she was walking ahead us. It was like something was urging her forward, causing her to move away from Mata's light and deeper into the darkness.
"Hazel! Where are you going?" Frank yelled, running after her before picking her up effortlessly and bringing her back to where the rest of us standing, confused.
Why did she just walk off like that?
"They're something evil in this maze and it's got Nico ."
"What?" Reyna asked, pacing around. "What how do you know?"
I nodded in agreement. How would she know? Unless she had so telepathic chain link, their's literally no other way for her to-
OH SHIT! SHE HAD A TELEPATHIC CHAIN LINK.
"Hazel, who told you that? When and what did they say?" I enquired hastily, rushing to her Hazel's side.
She looked up at me, eyes an empty pale yellow. She suddenly grew tired and looked like she was about to collapse but answered my questions never the less.
"Dominique," she started. "She just told me, that there's multiply evil presences in this Maze and we should be careful. Nico's already come in contact with one of them."
Reyna stole a glance at Frank.
What were they hiding?
