"Oh, when the nymphs. Go marching in. Oh when the nymphs go marching in..." An Apollo camper led the rest of us through the singalong.
I sat down, singing but not really in it. Dominique, Percy, Annabeth, Jason and Connor were missing, but everyone else was gathered around the campfire. It was a strange purple and orange dusky colour. Must've been because everyone else was nervous about the quest we were about to embark on. I definately was.
A weapon to destroy gods? How comes I never read that in Greek mythology?
Will strummed the ukulele, singing with the others, as if there was nothing going on. He met my eyes and expressed a look of concern, even if it was for a second. Using this attention to my advantage, I shot a confused look at him, using expressive gestures to convey a message.
He understood, pointing towards Cabin 13 and used his hands as a pillow to signify Nico, was asleep. I nodded at him and allowed him to get back to his song.
Hazel sat next to me, evidently bored since she wasn't singing.
"Ugh, I am so not looking forward to this quest," Hazel muffled into her hand, which she was resting her chin on. "I'm leading it. I'm not strong enough to do that."
"Um, yeah, you are." I looked at her as if she was crazy, and she smiled appreciatively. I focused my attention back on the Apollo kids, who were singing and playing their instruments in perfect harmony.
Imagine if I was leading the quest! All I'd be able to do is maybe sweet talk a super villain to hand me the weapon. I wasn't strong, courageous, a fighter, a strategist. If I had to lead anything, I knew it would fall apart.
Hazel underestimated her own strength. At 13, she could raise and manipulate ores, fight, manipulate the Mist. She was very intelligent and brave, but still kept an adorable and innocent demeanour. The demigod life hadn't broken her yet, and I prayed that it wouldn't.
I was glad that she was my leader. But, I was sort of disappointed that I wasn't with Jason. I couldn't help but realise that everyone was in the same group as their significant other; Hazel and Frank, Nico and Will and even Annabeth and Percy (though they're going through a rough patch right now). The only person left was Leo, but Calypso was not coming.
It was bad enough that we weren't going to travel together but the fact that we were going to two different continents bothered me. We were apart enough, him being Roman and me being Greek. Today was the last time we'd probably see each other in months and I was sitting here listening to sun babies sing.
Yawning dramatically, I stood up and made it look like I going to bed. "Oh gods, am I tired!" I whispered dramatically to Hazel. Either Hazel understood that I wanted to leave or she was too tired to care. Regardless, she hugged me and greeted me goodnight. I hugged Leo, who was sitting on the other side of Hazel.
"Jason's probably going to think that you're cheating on him." Leo teased. I parted from him and playfully elbowed him.
"Oh, shut up." I giggled. "You were my best friend first."
He nodded in agreement and I quickly walked off, hoping Chiron and Mr D wouldn't notice.
I pretended to stagger to my cabin but instead to a detour to Cabin 1, where I could see Jason's silhouette moving about from the window.
