Chapter 7: Escape Room
ShyAnne's POV
*One Month Later*
November. The start of the holiday season. Anyone that loves the holiday season obviously isn't in food service. Guests are beginning to roll into town and it's only the first week of November. Slow down people! It's usually super hard to request off around this time so I just roll with the punches and take whatever shifts my job gives me. Andy's been super understanding and, even though he just came up here last month, he's willing to make another trip to see me this month.
I took the early shift at work so I could get home and get ready before Andy arrives. As soon as my shift ended I clocked out and hurried home. I got dressed in a t-shirt and leggings, brushing my hair and leaving it down. My makeup still looked fine from work so that was one less thing I had to do. I sat down on my couch and called my mom since I hadn't talked to her in a while.
"Shy! Hello!" She exclaimed and I chuckled.
"Hi mom."
"What's up?"
"Well, I just wanted to let you and dad know that I'm dating someone."
"What? Who? When? Where? Why? How?" She rambled.
"It's kind of early, only two months, but I wanted to tell you because I'm going to hang out with him today and I was thinking about inviting him to Thanksgiving dinner."
"Of course! We would love to have him! Can you tell me a little bit about him?"
"Well, his name is Andy and I met him about 10 months ago. He's a singer in a band and-
"Woah, ShyAnne, wait. You're dating a rockstar? Oh honey."
"Mom, please just let me finish." I said and I heard her take a deep breath.
"Okay." She said.
"He's a singer in a band and I was driving home from a friend's house when I saw him all alone at a rest stop in the rain. His band accidentally left him behind so I offered him a ride since the show was in San Francisco. He got me backstage at the show and we've been talking ever since."
"Wait, so where does he live?"
"LA."
"ShyAnne, you're in a long distance relationship?"
"We see each other every month, mom, it's working out and I'm really happy."
"Well, I guess as long as you're happy."
"I am. Also, since it's long distance we're taking things slow. We haven't even kissed yet."
"Wow." She said and I agreed. All of a sudden, my phone buzzed. I pulled it away from my ear and saw it was a text from Andy saying he was about ten minutes away.
"Well mom, I've got to go."
"Alright, talk to you later honey, love you."
"Love you too." I said and hung up. I pulled on my shoes and scrolled on Instagram until my doorbell rang. I got up and answered it to be attacked by Andy with hugs.
"Oh I missed you so much." He said squeezing me tight.
"I missed you too." I said, hugging him back. I grabbed my keys and we walked out of my apartment. I locked the door behind me and we walked to my car.
"So, where are we going?" He asked, opening my door for me. I smiled and got in, turning the car on.
"You'll see." I said, putting my seat belt on. He smirked and closed my door, going around to his side and getting in.
"So like, you can't give me a hint?" He asked as I pulled out of my parking spot.
"Nope!" I said with a smile as I drove out of my complex's parking lot. After pushing me to spoil the surprise for a few more minutes, Andy shut up. I pulled into the parking lot of the place and luckily there was a spot right up front. I parked and shut off the car.
"An escape room?" He asked, getting out of the car. I got out and locked it, walking around to the front of my car.
"Yeah, I thought it might be fun."
"Alright bet." Andy said, quickening his pace and opening the door for me. I walked in and he followed me.
"Hello, welcome to EscapeSF! Have you made an appointment?" The lady at the front desk asked.
"Yes I have."
"What is the name?" She asked, looking at her computer.
"ShyAnne Evans." The lady scrolled for a minute before looking back up at me.
"Ah, here you are. You booked the Escape From Alcatraz for two?"
"Yes I did."
"Alright, follow me and I'll get you started." She said, walking out from behind the desk. We followed her through a door and down the hallway. The hallway had many doors, I'm assuming where all the escape rooms were set up. We finally reached our door and she led us in to the jail cell we were to start in.
"I hope you guys have a good time. There's a camera in the corner so we'll be able to keep an eye on you if you need anything. Also, if at any time you give up or freak out or something, press this button and the doors will unlock and you will be able to leave." She said, pointing to the big red button on the wall with white letters that said STOP. "Enjoy." She said, leaving the room and closing the door behind her. We heard the sound of a cell door closing and a person in a guards uniform appeared on the other side.
"Welcome to Alcatraz prisoners. Get comfy in that cell because that is where you are going to spend the rest of your miserable lives. Good luck." The guard laughed and walked off. A timer appeared on the wall starting at 60 minutes and counting down.
"Alright, uh, see if there's anything inside the wall." I said, touching every spot on the wall, hoping to find a panel of some kind.
"You don't want to check the mattress for something?" Andy asked, going near the bed.
"That's too obvious!" I said, continuing to check the wall.
"Too obvious, huh?" He asked and I turned to see he had a clue in his hand.
"Well read it!" I exclaimed, running over to him.

"I FOUND IT! I FOUND THE KEY!" I exclaimed, holding it up.
"Hurry! Unlock it! We have a minute left!" Andy hollered. I ran over to the cell door and put the key in the lock, turning it and pushing the cell door opened. We raced out of the cell and down the hall to the exit door.
"WOO!" Andy and I exclaimed high-fiving.
"Congrats guys! Come take a picture with our props." The lady from the front desk said, leading us to a wall with a backdrop with the company's logo on it. We each grabbed a sign and posed for a picture. My sign said "We escaped!" and Andy's sign said "two thumbs up". We took our picture and left, going back out to my car.
"So, was that worth the surprise?" I asked as we got in the car and I started it up.
"Yeah, it was really fun."
"Yeah, it was. I don't know if you noticed but we toured Alcatraz the same day you asked me out."
"Oh yeah." He said with a smile. We went out to dinner, and of course, Andy fought me until it was decided that he would pay. I drove him back to my apartment after dinner so we could hang out before he had to drive to his hotel. We cuddled on the couch and watched TV for a few hours.
"Well, I'll see you tomorrow." He said as we stood by his car.
"See you tomorrow." I said, hugging him. He hugged me back and then got in his car. We blew each other a kiss goodbye as he got in his car and drove away.
