Chapter 37
ShyAnne's POV
*One Week Later*
Andy is still in the hospital. There still is no change in his condition. He did have another heart attack this past week and as the doctor said, it did take a little longer for them to revive him. I'm really scared for him to have another one.
I was laying in the cot, half-sleeping. I hardly ever slept in the cot, maybe thirty minutes to an hour at a time. It was just so uncomfortable, but it's worth it to be here for Andy. I heard groaning coming from Andy and I shot up, shuffling over to him.
"Andy?" I asked and his eyes opened ever so slightly. He groaned again and I grabbed his hand. "Squeeze my hand if you can understand me." He gave my hand the weakest squeeze. "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god." I said, a smile plastered on my face. I ran to the door and poked my head out of his room, grabbing the attention of the first nurse I saw.
"He's awake!" I exclaimed. She quickly put down what she was doing and rushed over to me. She walked into the room and began to check his vitals. She extubated him and strapped an oxygen mask onto his face. They had already started the weaning process off of his ventilator and he had been breathing okay while he was out.
"If he has trouble breathing, we'll put him back on the ventilator, but his breath sounds are fine to me. His doctor starts his shift in a few hours so I'll send him in here when he gets here." The nurse told me and then left.
I walked over to Andy and grabbed his hand, tears rolling down my face. I brought his hand up to my face and kissed it as we just stared at each other. He picked up his other hand to move his oxygen mask but I stopped him.
"Don't speak, give it time." He said. He touched his throat with his hand and I thought for a moment. "You want ice?" I asked and he nodded. I left to get him some ice chips and came back, sitting down next to him. I lowered his mask and spooned a few pieces into his mouth. He chewed on them and swallowed them. After about five minutes of eating ice, he put up his hand to stop me.
"H-How long?" He asked. His voice was so hoarse and weak, but it brought me so much joy to hear it again.
"Two weeks." I said and his eyes went wide.
"W-What happened?" He asked, racking his brain for any type of memory of the event.
"You got in a car crash near LA and were taken here. You broke your leg and had internal bleeding as well as bleeding in your brain. All that has seemed to resolve, we were just waiting for you to wake up. Your heart also stopped twice in the last week." He lifted his hand to run his fingers through his hair but stopped and furrowed his eyebrows when he realized he was bald. "Oh, they had to shave your head for surgery." I said.
"Awh man." He chuckled, a look of pain crossing his face as he rubbed his throat.
"Do you want me to call your parents or do you want to sleep some more? They're staying in a nearby hotel."
"Call them." He said. "I've slept enough."
"Okay." I smiled, kissing his forehead. I left and began to cry from joy. I dialed Andy's mom's number and waited.
"Hello?" She answered, her voice groggy. All I could do was cry into the phone. "ShyAnne, what happened?" She asked, suddenly sounding so much more awake.
"H-He's awake." I stuttered out.
"Oh my god, we'll be right there." She said and hung up. I leaned against the wall and composed myself, drying my eyes. I walked back into his room and sat with him until his parents got there. I switched places with them and stood out in the hallway.
Andy's mom gave him a big hug, crying into his shoulder. Andy softly rubbed her back and his dad gave him a hug once his mom let go. I sat down on the ground and ended up falling asleep.
I was woken up by Andy's mom shaking my shoulder. I looked up at her and she was smiling at me.
"Doctor's here, I figured you'd want to be there to talk to him." She said.
"How long was I out?" I asked, running my fingers through my hair and rubbing my eyes.
"A few hours." She said. I stood up and walked into the room with Andy's dad and the doctor.
"Nice to see you again ShyAnne." The doctor smiled.
"You too." I said, sitting in the chair next to Andy and grabbing his hand.
"Andy, while you were out, we were successful in getting your internal bleeding to stop and from the exam I just performed, you don't seem to have suffered any brain damage. If there are no issues for two days, so all of today and all of tomorrow, we should be able to move you out of the ICU and to a regular room."
"We live in San Francisco so when would we be able to go home?" I asked.
"We would like him to spend one day stable in a regular room and then I don't see why we couldn't discharge you. You would just have to go to the hospital in San Francisco to get your stitches in your head removed and also to get check ups on your leg." He went over a few more things and then left the room.
