One Smile Please
Chapter Fifteen:
"I'm going to go and get the grill from the shed," I say getting up. "I'll be back in a second, okay Cece?" she nods. This morning I had gone to get Cece, and before I had left we had decorated the house somewhat and decided to have a bit of a barbeque party. It was to help her settle in and get to know everybody. We'd just done the introductions when I realised that no one had gotten the grill, so we couldn't actually start the barbeque.
Fraser gets up along with me, "I'll come with you." 'A couple others' huh... We move out through the slide door that leads into the garden and walk to the shed, in silence. When we get there and I fiddle with the key, Fraser speaks up. "I need to talk to you about something..."
"If it's about those 'other employees you talk to in the middle of the night, then I'd really rather not."
Fraser smirks slightly before shaking his head, "No it's not that."
All of a sudden things Lexi said yesterday come rushing back to me.
"So you and Cameron huh?" He likes you.... You do know that right? I mean can you not tell? He looks at you all the time, he can literally not keep his eyes off you, he also talks about you a lot and didn't you guys go on a date? Dates usually mean the people like each other,"
He stares at me intensely with beautiful sea green eyes of his. Wait did I actually just think that? "Look I don't want to ruin our friendship, but I have to tell you this..." No, he can't like me. Please, you can't like me. I'd been thinking about what Lexi had said all night yesterday, and it freaked me out. Fraser couldn't like me. I don't think I'm ready... I think I squeezed my eyes shut. "But you have chocolate smeared all over your face... how you managed that with one visit to the kitchen is beyond me," he said cracking up. For some reason I was entranced by his laugh. What the hell mate? Why's this happening?
Shaking my head, I huffed, "I comfort eat when I'm nervous." I mutter, whilst rubbing at my face. That's why everyone was giggling when I walked out of the kitchen. Damn.
"Why were you nervous?" He questions after having his laughing fit. I feel him step closer. I refuse to look in his eyes.
I wasn't going to tell him I was nervous because he was around, that would be stupid, "Because of Cece..." That was partially true. She seemed really detached from everyone. She wasn't smiling, laughing or talking much. "I'm scared I won't be good enough for her. I mean, it's not like I have experience in child care, and I'm not exactly the best role model."
"Charlie, trust me your perfect," his voice sounded huskier as I realised how close we were. I dared to look into his eyes and I saw them staring right back at me. His eyes didn't hold the same pain they did when I first met him on the bridge. They held a renewed happiness. That made me smile, but then I acknowledged what he said and instantly a frown took over. Wait, what does he mean? "For her... I meant you're going to be perfect for her. Because you're kind, sweet, nice, you love kids and you know exactly what someone needs or needs to hear. You'll be fine, trust me." That made me smile again. He really thought that of me?
"Thanks Fraser, I needed that." This time he smiles. I unlock the door and Fraser helps me take the grill out. After that, everyone pours out into the garden, and we start the barbeque. Fraser is busy with the grill, Jenny was talking with Cece (I think she told a joke which is why they both cracked a smile which was sweet) and Simon was busy flirting with Lexi. Oh yeah, last night after Vincent left we ended up inviting Brad and Lexi to the barbeque as well. Fraser was already coming, well because he was the main reason I even managed to get temporary custody of Cece.
