Chapter 6:
Tobias' Perspective
The doctors try to stop me from getting to her room. I push past them, and run down the hallway. I see wounded men on stretchers, I don't know what they were wounded from. Probably from trying a liittle to hard to be Dauntless.
I walk past other hospital rooms, looking for my last name. Nope, nope, nope. Is her room even on this hall? I slow my run down to a jog and keep looking. I jog past a door, and barely read the name on it. I don't know why but I get a feeling that it's her room. I turn around and walk to the door I passed. I stare at it for a second, and read the name. Eaton. Room 464.
I turn the knob on the door, and walk in. She's laying on the hospital bed, and for a second just for a second, she looks like Tris when she was in my apartment laying on my bed after I washed the blood off my hands. When Peter, Drew, and Al tried to throw her in the chasm, and I beat the crap out of Drew. When I carried her off into my apartment.
Tris looked beaten down, and helpless laying on my bed. So does Natalie, and it's my fault that she looks like this. I stand in the doorway, just staring at her. She's sleeping and breathing tubes are hooked up to her nose. I shut the door, and sit on her bed next to her.
I stare down at her hand, which is pale and shriveled. I take her hand and squeeze it. It's so cold. I hear the door open and turn to see that it's Tris. After Tris walks in, I see Will and Christina.
"Why'd you run?" says Tris. "I..." I begin to say, but my voice cracks and I realize that I'm crying. I hate crying. Not because other people say men don't cry, but that I'm crying because I'm sitting in a hospital room squeezing my wounded daughter's hand and knowing that it's my fault that we're all sitting here waiting for what's gonna happen next.
Tris walks over to me and hugs me. I don't hug her back, instead I lead forward on Natalie's hospital bed and cry into the sheets. Tris lets go and whispers in my ear, "She's gonna be okay. You know why?" I stop crying and say, "Why?" and she looks up at me and says.
"Because she's a fighter. She'll always regain her strength. No matter how weak she was before." I wipe my cheeks and smile. Christina is sitting next to Natalie in a chair stroking her hair and talking to her. Will is painting her toe nails. I laugh.
"Why are you doing that?" I say. Tris looks over and laughs. "Because, first I'm kinda bored, and second I figured she'd be happy to see her little toes all fancy lookin'." says Will. We all laugh and Christina says, "Is that a Nose thing?" Will puts the brush in the bottle and says, "No, I just wanted to."
We all laugh and Tris lies next to Natalie on the hospital bed and tells her the story of when we had our first official date in Millennium park. Will opens the bottle back up and continues to paint her toenails.
"Well, I'm gonna sneak over to the Amity Compound and pick some flowers. I'll be back in about an hour. But, if I take longer than an hour, send somebody after me. Chances are I'll be dancing through the orchards with a flower in my hair under peace serum." says Christina as she picks up her purse. We laugh and Christina opens the door and leaves. I let go of Natalie's hand and sit in the chair next to Natalie that Christina was sitting in.
"....and then he kissed me. I was so happy we got a real date. Well, not one where we were running from the Erudite. I had never appreciated that moment more than I do now." Natalie is still sleeping, but Tris keeps talking.
"Oh, I remember the time I went zip lining! Ohh, that was so much fun! I felt so alive when I was zipping through the air! I went before Uncle Uriah and when I was on it, I stuck my arms out." she says as she puts her arms in the air and closes her eyes, like she's doing it right now.
She puts them down and continues. "I felt like a bird, soaring through the sky. It was amazing." she smiles and looks over at me. I smile back at her. I sit back in the chair, and close my eyes.
I hear the heart monitor beeping steadily showing that Natalie's heart was still beating. Tris telling her stories, and Will's yell of victory as he finishes Natalie's nails. I look at the time. 7:39.
I don't know why, but I'm really tired. I close my eyes again. Before I know it, I'm sleeping too.
More drama! But I added a little humor in there so it didn't seem too depressing. I was thinking about actually putting Christina under peace serum while she was at the Amity Compound, but I just thought of an even better idea for the next chapter! If you would like for me to, just send me a message and I'll write a version of it for you! But, it won't be apart of the actual book, just a bonus chapter! Don't forget to vote and comment! :)
