Chapter 13:
Natalie's Perspective
"What?" I say looking him in the eye. "I was abused as a child. And all the way up until the Choosing Ceremony." he says. I take his hand. "Why didn't you tell me last night?" I say.
I look down at my hand. "I didn't know whether to tell you or not tell you." he says. He looks ashamed. "Why are you ashamed?" I ask. I look into his eyes. They are a dark shade of blue. Like mine when I get upset. "Because, you would never look at me the same." he says looking away.
"What? Why would I look at you differently?" I say. "Because, I was beaten and not the father you thought I was." he says. What in the heck? This doesn't change anything! Why would he be so ashamed of himself? It wasn't his fault. He lets go of my hand and takes the collar of his shirt and lifts. "Why are you doing that?" I say.
"You'll see." he says and yanks his shirt off of his head. He kneels down and I look at his back. I see the faction symbols go down his back, each one getting smaller. Then I notice something else. Scars lining small parts of his back. I walk to him, and touch one of the scars.
"Who did this?" I say my voice getting colder. He sighs and stands up, leaving my face facing his chest. I step back so I can see his face. He's very tall and I'm only 5'4. I think he's 6'4, but I could be wrong. "Marcus" he says. My grandpa?
I've never met him, but I thought since that Dad was so sweet and happy that he'd be the same way. I guess not. "How many times?" I say. He stands there with no shirt on. "Enough times." he says. I don't do anything.
"And why would you think that I'd treat you differently?" I say. He's very doubtful of himself. He doesn't realize how great of a person he has always been. He sighs. "And why would you think that you're not worth anything because of your past?" I say.
"So what I'm understanding, is you don't think less of me?" I say. "Duh! They're just scars! They didn't scar your future! Now, tell me how has your scars have put you down in life?" I say.
I cross my arms. "They haven't." he says. I now hate my grandpa. He beat my Dad and made him think less of himself because of who his father was. "Exactly. You are the same person you were when you first got them. You've changed of course, but that doesn't make you less of a human being." I say.
I'm really good at this. Dang. I should do this more often. "I know, but I've kept my background a secret for a long time." he says.
"I know it's hard to tell people something you've kept a secret for a long time." I say. "But, that doesn't mean they won't understand." I say handing him his shirt.
He takes it and puts it on. "I know." he says. "I love you Dad." I say. I know he knows that but, I want him to know that I do even though he told me his secret. I hug him and he hugs back. "I love you too." he says. I pull away and poke him in the stomach.
"Race ya downstairs!" I say and then run. I hear him run after me and I run down the stairs. "So, how'd it go?" Mom says as she leans on the staircase railing sipping her coffee. "Nothing changed. I don't know why he was so nervous. He's still my Dad." I say walking to the fridge.
Dad comes in behind me. "Well, she didn't react any way I thought she could have." he says. I open the fridge door and take out a frozen chicken and rice burrito. They are over there talking, and I don't listen. Dad walks away and comes back with a duffle bag.
I don't feel like preheating the oven, so I just heat my hand up and cook it. I start munching away at it, but Dad comes up and lifts me over his shoulder. He reaches onto the couch and grabs the duffle bag. I drop my burrito. "My burrito!" I shout.
"I'm going to the Amity Market to get some groceries, and you're coming with me." he says as he walks up the stairs. Mom is waving her fingers at me. "But I'm not even dressed!" I say. I am still in my pajamas. "So?" he says.
"I don't want to be seen by a bunch of Amity!" I say. My stomach digs into his shoulder as he hops up every step. "They won't say anything, they'll do anything to keep from getting a Dauntless mad." he says. "But I'm not Dauntless!" I say.
"Considering the way you shoot and fight, you kind of are." he says. Was that a compliment? "But still, I haven't brushed my teeth, and my breath probably reeks!" I say. I hear him type in the code. The metal door swings open.
I duck before I can hit my head on the door frame. I hear the garage door open and the car click as the doors unlock. He sets me down and I climb into the front seat. He opens the door and sits in the seat. "Why do I have to go?" I say. He starts the car and puts it into gear.
"I want you to help me pick out some fruit." he says. "Why can't you do that by yourself?" I say. He sighs and backs the car out of the garage. "Because I just want to spend some time with my daughter." he says looking behind him and shutting the garage door with a remote.
"We always do that." I say. He puts the car in gear, and drives across the grass. He doesn't say anything. He's trying to spend time with you. Don't ask why. "Oohh! Can we get watermelon? I love watermelon!" I say.
"Yes, we can get watermelon. But after, we need to visit the Dauntless gun shop." he says. "Are you gonna buy another gun?" I say. We hit a bump. I almost hit my head on the roof, but I'm too short. "Yeah, and some more bullets." he says.
"Can we buy some Dauntless cake?" I ask. I smile and bat my eyes on purpose. He laughs. "Maybe" he says. We cross the train tracks and get on the Amity roads. He reaches in the duffle bag he put in the back, and grabs 2 wigs. He hands me a long, wavy, blonde wig. "Put this on. There are Erudite everywhere looking for you." he says. "I need one of those things where it makes you look bald." I say.
He reaches back, and hands me one, and also hands me contacts. I put them on and look in the mirror. They made my eyes brown. I pull my hair up and stick it into the bald thing. I pull out the mirror on the top of the car and adjust it. I see a lock of brown hair sticking out above my ear. I push it underneath the bald thing and adjust the wig and put it on.
I fix it and say, "How do I look?" he stares at me and says, "Beautiful." he smiles. "I still look kind of like myself though, I need something else." I say. I climb in the back, and see Aunt Christy's make-up bag she left when she borrowed the car. I grab it and sit up in the front. Dad shakes his head. "Please, not make-up." he says.
He puts the wig on and tells me to adjust it. I fix it for him and he flips his head. I laugh. The wig is a really light brown with darker brown streaks.
"I have to, I still look like myself. And I'm wearing black." I say. I open the bag and see eye shadow, concealer, foundation, mascara, eye liner, blush, lip gloss, and tweezers. I don't need the concealer or foundation, so I grab the eye shadow. I open it and stare at the color options.
Black I want black eye shadow. No, that looks too Dauntless. I grab the pink eye shadow and put it on. Then I put eye liner on, and some mascara. I pinch my cheeks to give them a pink flush and put on some lip gloss. I stare at myself in the mirror. Gosh, I look.....different. I look at Dad and he sighs.
"I still look Dauntless!" I say. "Okay! We'll sneak into the clothing store and we'll get you some Amity clothes." he says turning on a street. "That'll work." I say.
He turns another corner and he slams on the brake. A huge group of men in brown masks are blocking the road. They are all holding guns.
Can you guess who the men were in the brown masks? I still haven't had anybody send me a message about helping me with ideas with a part for a chapter. Don't be shy!
