Chapter 9:

Tris' Perspective

Tobias called me, and I hear a female voice. I don't say anything, and walk into the hall. "Where is Natalie?" says the female voice. "What do you want with her?" says Tobias. "I told you, she has a special ability. I want to see if it worked!" says the female voice.

"What worked?" says Tobias. "Remember when you were at the Amity hospital, and you didn't want Natalie to be injected with a tracker?" says the female voice. I remember that. Jeanine tried to hold Natalie when she was born.

"Yes, but..." says Tobias. "It wasn't a tracker. It was a new serum." says Jeanine. "WHAT? You used my child as a test for your serum!?" yells Tobias. "Yes, she is the only one who has been injected with it." says Jeanine. She says it so calmly.

"What are the abilities?" says Tobias. From the way he says it, I can tell he's saying it through clenched teeth. "Well, if my calculations are correct, she should have the abilities of blue properties." says Jeanine. "Blue properties? What is that?" says Tobias.

"Um, the ability of Blue Flames." says Jeanine.  "Blue flames? What do you mean?" says Tobias. "She can shoot flames out of her hands, like a flame thrower." says Jeanine.

"What is it called?" says Tobias. "The serum was someting new. It was suppossed to be for a new type of people instead of Divergents." she says. "Why did you choose her for it?" says Tobias.

"She seemed like a good type. She was born Divergent. Not many children these days are born like that, so I thought since she was already different than she'd be a good person to posses something like that. I call it Flamethrower." says Jeanine.

"Flamethrower? Are the flames cold or hot?" says Tobias. "They're flames, it's hot." says Jeanine. "Well, you made it, so maybe it could have been cold." says Tobias.

"I'm sorry we didn't tell you, but the serum has a time limit. I had just verified it the day Natalie was born, so it had a time limit to it. If I had waited longer, the serum would have spoiled." says Jeanine. "Why would you do that?! I have had enough of this!" says Tobias.

"I still need to see her." says Jeanine. "No, now if you'll excuse me." says Tobias. Then he hangs up. Flamethrower? Natalie's eyes are blue, does that have something to do with it?

Natalie has a few more days until she is 12 years and a month. I put my phone away, and run into the room. "Natalie, we have to go right now!" I say. "What's wrong?" says Natalie.

"Dad's gonna meet us at the car, we need to go now!" I say. I grab her hand and run out of the room. "Mom, what's wrong?" says Natalie. I can't tell her she is the only "Flamethrower" in human existence, and we're running from the woman who has tried to kill her parents, and in fact tried to kill her. I've never gotten a break.

I've been running from Jeanine ever since the aptitude test. I'm tired of running. "We just have to leave right now, I'll explain it at the safe house." I say and turn the corner.

There is a blue dressed man, standing in front of me with a gun in his hand. I turn the other way and run. I hear the bullets, but don't get shot. I see and exit sign, and push the door open. We run down the alley next to the hospital, and Natalie says, "Mom, I can't run much further! My head is pounding, and I'm too weak." she stops and holds her head and drops to her knees.

I run back, and pick her up. I hold her around my back and she wraps her arms around my shoulders, and I grasp the underside of her knees. I hear a few more men coming after us, and bullets miss us and hit the pipes. They are Erudite after all, and can't shoot.

"Mom!" Natalie yells. Just as she said that, Tobias comes in the car. He comes from behind me, and I hear the tires screech. I turn around, and see him staring wide-eyed at me. I run to the car, and put Natalie in the back. I jump in the front, and Tobias drives foward.

"There are about 3 men behind us, they have guns but I don't think they have much coordination with them though." I say. Tobias bites his lip and says, "I kind of already took care of that." he says. I see a gun sitting in his lap. "Do you have an extra one?" I say.

"Uh, look in the glove box." he says as we hit a huge bump. I hit my head on the ceiling. "Sorry!" he says. I bite my lip to keep from yelling at him. I look in the glove box, and see a gun. I grab it and check how many bullets are left.

"Won't Natalie need one?" says Tobias. "Why?" I say and then see him driving towards another pothole in the street. I brace myself as he hits the bump. "We can't leave her unarmed!" he says. "Fine!" I say and hand her the gun underneath the seat. I hear her check how many bullets are left, and set it down.

"Has she shot before?" I say. "Of course she has! I've tought her how to!" he says. "We are going to the safe house right?" I say. "Yeah, but when are you gonna tell her?" he says. "I will!" I say. "Tell me what?" says Natalie. "Wait until we get to get to the safe house!" I say.

I'm tired of running these streets. I have been running from my enemies for years, I need to face them. But how? Jeanine just won't stop. I've stopped and settled down and she still won't stop. She's been the cause of my parents death, and still won't give it a rest. It's my turn. I take my phone out and text Marlene, Christina, and Zeke to not go to the apartment because Jeanine is waiting.

Natalie is in the back, and says "I need more bullets.". "Wait! What am I thinking? Natalie needs to be resting!" I say. A part of me is saying she needs to protect herself, which is my Dauntless half, but my Abnegation half is telling me she needs to be resting and heal.

"What? She can't be sitting there doing nothing! It's like saying, 'Hey! I'm sitting over here unarmed, come and get me!'." Tobias says. He pulls a box of bullets out from underneath his seat, and hands it to Natalie. I glare at him. He just scrunches up his nose and snorts.

I laugh, and playfully slap him on the leg. "Don't make me laugh when I'm mad at you!" I say. He laughs and takes my hand.

"Don't be a butt kisser!" I say. But I hold his hand anyways. "I don't do that." he says. I laugh. We are driving in the grass now, and I can see the safe house. "We're here!" says Tobias. His grip on my hands tightens and then he lets go as he parks the car in the garage.

Natalie hops out, and runs dowstairs where her room is. I get out and shut the door. The garage smells like must and sweat. Tobias tosses the keys in his hands and says, "I haven't been in the garage in a while. Or downstairs."

He walks over to me and I run my fingers through my hair, trying to scratch my head, but without making it look weird. "Me either, are you sure this place will be okay?" I say. "Positive." he says as he holds me by the bend in my waist. I hook my arms around his neck, and run my fingers through his hair. His hair his soft, and his scalp is rough. He kisses me, and I kiss back.

His fingers spread across my waist and he wraps his arms around me and holds me tight. I'm still shorter than him, but that doesn't stop me from kissing him. My feet are off the ground and his lips are moving against mine.

He sets me down ans says, "You weren't shaking like you usually do." I didn't realize that. After 12 years of being married to him, I guess I'm used to it. "Maybe I've gotten used to it." I say.

He smiles and lifts me off the ground, his arms wrapped around my back, my arms bind by his arms. I kiss him more certain this time, and he kisses back. He lets go of me, and hugs me. I wrap my arms around him. "What's wrong?" I say.

"Nothing, it just feels good to hug you." he says. I smile and then sigh. I walk off, and he locks the doors to the car and follows me.

Finally! Through Tris' perspective! I know Natalie seems like the one who sits in the side lines and watches but once she discovers her power, she'll be a warrior! I'm working on the next chapter! I'll have it in pretty soon, but until then don't forget to vote and comment! :)
