Chapter 26:
Natalie's Perspective
I run out of the room, and past everybody that was in the waiting room. "Natalie!" I hear Uncle Uriah yell. I ignore him, and run towards the area where they're doing surgery. Doctors move out of the way for me as I mutter apologies under my breath.
"Dad!" I yell out. I have no idea where he is but I'm looking for my last name on the doors. I skid to a stop when I see "ton" on a door. I back up and see my last name. I look in the window, and see Dad laying helplessly on the bed. I open the door and stare at him.
"Daddy....." I whisper. He has tubes in his nose and down his throat. I hear the beeping of the heart monitor, letting me know he is still alive. He has two casts on his legs, and I yelp knowing that I'm the one who caused this. I walk slowly over to him.
I put my hand on his hand, and rub his knuckles with my thumb. "I'm sorry Dad..." I say, tears welling up in my eyes.
"This is all my fault. I'm so so sorry, Dad." I say. I feel tears stream down my face, and I sniff. "I love you." I say through sobs. I want to hug him, but his chest is wrapped in bandages. Instead, I cry into his wrist. He doesn't move.
"I did this to you..." I say choking. I look down at the bandages on his thighs, and cry harder. I stare at his eye lids and close mine, trying to disappear from this world. "Natalie!" I hear Uncle Uriah say. I open my eyes, and realize that I'm still here. I look over at him, and cry harder.
"It's all my fault he's here...." I say. He looks from me to Dad and sighs. He picks me up, pulls up a chair, and sits me in his lap. I put my hands over my face and sob into them. "I burned him." I say. He sighs again. I all of a sudden realize what I just said. Shoot.....
"I mean....." I start, but he interrupts. "Tris told me, I know." he says. "Aren't you afraid?" I say. He shakes his head. "You should be, look at what I did to him." I say crying harder.
He looks over at Dad, and all I long for right now, is Dad. I want him to hug me, tell me he loves me, and kiss me on my cheek. I hear someone walk in.
"It's not his lungs that are in his way now, he's breathing just fine. It's the burns that are causing him serious pain." says a woman. I turn to see the same doctor that woke me up. I sob into my hands, and Uncle Uriah wraps me in a hug.
"We knocked him out so his lungs could adjust to breathing on their own." she says taking the tube from his mouth, and from his nose. "The Erudite have released a new serum for speed healing." she says. I perk up at the words that came out of her mouth.
"Then give him some!" I yell. She presses her lips together. "The problem is, it costs money." she says.
"Bullsh-" Uncle Uriah says, but I stop him before he can finish. "How much?" I say. I have had quite a bit of money stashed away at the apartment. I saved half of it from birthdays, Christmas, and other holidays. The other half, I got from working in the Amity fields a couple years ago. "Three hundred dollars." she says. I sigh.
There goes half of my savings...... "And why should we have to pay extra money for you to heal him? Shouldn't you do that for free?" says Uncle Uriah. "Well, we didn't make the rules." she says. "So you expect people to walk around with three hundred dollars?" he says.
She scrunches up her eye brows. But before she can say anything, I interrupt her. "I have the money." I say. He stares at me wide eyed. "Do I dare even ask where you got that kind of money from?" he says. "I didn't steal it, they're savings." I say. He still looks shocked, but nods. "I have the money, but I think Tris would get mad if I paid. I think she'd want to pay." he says.
I hear my mother's nickname all the time, but apparently Uncle Caleb is the only one who calls her by her real name, Beatrice. Where my middle name happens to be Bea. I nod. "No, I'll pay. Don't even tell her about the money. Just say you have a special speed-healing serum. It's my fault he's here, and I should pay for it. Plus, he's my Dad. He's probably spent more than that on me." I say.
"Natalie...." Uncle Uriah says. "Just don't tell anybody. It's not a problem for me." I say. I sit up straighter, remembering I am not a slouch kind of person. "Do you have it now?" asks the doctor. "No, but it's at my apartment." I say. She nods.
"I'll go with you to get the money, but I expect ten bucks to keep my mouth shut." says Uncle Uriah. I laugh. "Yeah right. I'd singe your eye brows off if you did tell." I joke. He laughs. He stops laughing, and his eyes go wide. "Seriously?" he says. "No, it was a joke." I say. He nods.
I stand up, and he stands up behind me. "Lets go!" he says. I walk over to Dad before I leave. "I'm doing this for you, I'm never gonna tell you I paid for this, okay? Or pretty much anybody. I love you." I say. I kiss him on the forehead, and follow Uncle Uriah out the door.
I wonder if I could pay to speed-heal my Mom.....I'm gonna grab six hundred dollars instead to pay for Mom's burn. It will completely heal any other sicknesses or wounds she might have. I nod to myself. I walk behind him, and soon see my whole family in the waiting room. I smile and walk over to them.
"Hi." I say quietly. "NATALIE!!!!" they scream. I laugh as they all pull me into a group hug. "I missed you guys!" I say. "We missed you too." they say.
"I love you!" I shout. I hear them all say it too, but my eyes are focused on Mariah. She smiles at me, and I smile back. We all release each other. Everybody is staring at me with tears in their eyes, but the smiles on their faces prove that they're tears of joy.
"Well, Natalie and I are heading back to the apartment to pick up some clean clothes for Tris and Four. We'll be back in about an hour." says Uncle Uriah. Everybody nods, except Mom. She walks over to me and takes my face in her hands.
"I love you." she says. I smile and put my hand over her hand. "Love you too." I say. She lets go. "Okay, but while you're at it, grab my toothbrush and toothpaste." she says. She hugs Uncle Uriah as if she is saying goodbye for the last time. Is she going somewhere? Uncle Uriah nods at her, and we walk towards the door.
I walk out behind Uncle Uriah and look back. Mom is turned away, but she's talking to Aunt Shauna. I snap out of my daze and walk down the hall. I see the lining of a gun strapped to his waist band, through his shirt. I almost forget about a gun, but he turns around with a gun in hand.
"I don't think anybody else needs to know about that." he says pointing to my hands. I take the gun and strap it to my waist band. We push the doors open, and the sunlight almost blinds me. I squint, and bump into a person in the process.
I can barely see their face, but I can tell they're staring at me. "Natalie, come on." Uncle Uriah says. I nod and open my eyes a little bit more.
The person's face is clearer. I find out that he's a young boy. He's wearing Abnegation clothes, and he looks worn.
My heart hops into my throat, and I realize who it is.
