Chapter 31:
Natalie's Perspective
I am sitting on the couch, forbidden to go into my own room. Mom ran over to Uncle Uriah's apartment, and hasn't been back in about twenty minutes.
Anytime I hear the dish washer make a noise, I flinch. I keep looking at the huge glass wall that overlooks the city to make sure there aren't any more bodies dangling by a rope.
Mom told me to just go eat dinner and not to go into my room. I don't feel like eating. Seeing a dead body hung by a rope on my window doesn't exactly make you want to eat. I glance at the clock in the corner of the room, and it's 4:58.
Dad should be home in two minutes. I hope he is. I don't want to be alone at a murder scene. I refuse to move because it feels like if I move, a bomb is gonna go off. Mom where are you? Hurry up! I hear the door open, and I jump. Mom looks just as scared as I am.
"Sweetheart, are you okay?" she says, and walks over to me. She embraces me in a hug, and I bury my face in her shoulder. "There was tapping." I say. She sighs.
"We're gonna have to figure out who did this because nobody's going to help. I'm pretty sure that woman was Jeanine. Actually, I'm positive it was her." she says. She rubs my back.
"Where's Dad?" I say. "I don't know, but we need him here. With us." she says. "I know." I say.
About ten minutes after the couch "bomb" I finally get up. Mom told me to go watch T.V. in her and Dad's room, while she and Uncle Uriah get the body away from my window.
I can't believe that Dad's not home yet. I decide not to watch the Walking Dead, and just watch this movie called, "Frozen Ever After". It's the sequel to Frozen, and it's really good so far. I'm not shaking anymore, but the image has not left my head.
"Natalie!" yells Mom. "Yes?" I shout back. "Come here!" she yells. I groan, and get up. I swing the door open, and walk into the living room. Uncle Uriah is standing there, eating Dauntless cake.
Dad is gonna be so mad. "Yes?" I say. "I think we should go back to the safe house." she says. I don't mind the safe house, it's just that we can't use our phones and there's no T.V. "Okay, but...." I say, but she interrupts. "I know that there's no T.V. or phone, but I'd much rather be safe than receive a text." she says.
Uncle Uriah nods crumbs flying from his mouth. Mom scowls. "Gosh, Uri! Go to the kitchen! Ugh, and on my rug! Gosh!" she yells. Uncle Uriah smirks, and walks to the kitchen. "Anyway, we're gonna be there for a long time. I figured we wouldn't be done running." she says.
"But, what about Dad?" I say. "We're gonna have to wait until he gets home. Until then, we're just gonna pack our valuables. I'll do your room if you don't want to go in there." she says. "No, I'll do it." I say. She cups my face in her hands. "Okay, just don't leave anything behind." she says. I nod, and walk over to my bedroom door.
It's just a bedroom. Geez, get a hold of yourself. I open the door, and walk in. My bedroom looks the same, of course. The shades are open revealing the city, not a woman. I walk over to the family portrait that is hanging above my bed. The picture is of me on Dad's back, and him holding Mom bridal style.
My head is peeked over his shoulder and Mom is holding him around the neck, and placing a kiss on his cheek. He is wide eyed, and I have my nose scrunched up, and my tongue sticking out. "A cute way to look disgusted" the photographer called it. The picture is actually a hidden panel. I have to tap certain areas on the portrait to unlock it.
Dad's Bicep. My Ring finger which is gripped on Dad's shoulder. Mom's Ankle. The Veins popping out on Dad's arm. My right Eye which is the only one that is open, because I was closing my left one.
The panel opens, and I see the fifty dollars left from what I spent on Mom and Dad. I almost forgot about that. I have a lot of valuable jewelry I was given when I was younger, and Mom always told me she kept it there. I found out about it when I was ten.
Hopefully Mom won't know that six hundred dollars are missing from the safe. It's a small metal area that doesn't hold much. Mom and Dad's is even bigger. I grab a bag from my toy box at the foot of my bed. The toy box has been turned into the bag crate though. I stuff the jewelry and money into the bag, and shut the panel. I stare at the picture, and realize that it is my favorite picture of us.
I sometimes want a sibling, but other times I like it when I have them to myself. I zip the bag up, and walk out of my room. I walk into Mom's room and she's halfway into the safe that's in the corner of their room. "I packed it." I say.
"Okay, let me see." she says pulling herself from the safe. "I...uhhh..." I say, but she takes the bag. She unzips it, and looks around in it. "Okay the jewelry....." she says, but stares hard at the fifty dollars. I bite my lip, ready to explain.
"Where is the six hundred dollars?" she says. Think Think Think....... "I donated it to the factionless. They had no food, so I bought them some from the Amity." I say. She looks at me, and then smiles. "You did? How sweet. I guess you really do have some Abnegation in you." she says.
"Yeah....Let's just say the factionless will have quite a bit of food fro the next couple of weeks." I say. "But, Natalie. Why didn't you tell us? It's nice that you did that, but you should have told us and it would have been easier." she says. I nod.
"When did you buy all that anyway?" she says. "I paid an Amity to go shopping for it. I had a Dauntless watch over her so she didn't use it for herself." I say. She nods.
"Well, I guess you can go wait in the living room." she says. She gets up, and walks over to the safe. I zip the bag up, and walk into the living room.
I guess Uncle Uriah left because some of it is still on the table. I walk over to it, and eat the mess out of it.
Hey guys! I think this was a pretty good chapter! Do you? I hope you do! I dedicated this chapter to Ashtynlea because she guessed right on who the dead body was! Go follow her, she is an awesome person!!!!!!!! Don't forget to vote and comment! :)
