Chapter 41:
Tobias' Perspective
"It won't open!" I say, trying to budge the hatch door open. I beat on it, and then it flies open and something wet drops on my face. I put my finger on the drop, and look at my finger. Blood.
I topple out, and stare at the ground. Tris comes out after me. She shuts the hatch door, and stares at the ground. The grass is pressed down, and you can see where a car sat. The mud is also dug up from tires.
This was clearly where Natalie was. She was bleeding. And now she's gone. "We missed her." Tris says, stomping on the ground. "Just follow the tracks." I say. "We don't have any weapons!" Tris shouts. "We have to get to her." I say.
I start towards the tracks, but Tris grabs my arm. "Tobias, we don't have any guns. Chances are we'll get shot before we can even get to her." she says. I grunt in frustration, and turn around and can see the tip of the fence.
"So, we're gonna walk all the way back?" I say. "I don't know yet." she says. I groan because I really don't want to walk again and waste time.
"Wait, I think I stuffed a gun under my waist band." she says. She lifts uo her shirt, and takes a small gun out. "There, that works we have to go!" I say, and start towards the tracks. She catches up, and the gun swings back and forth in her hand.
I then see a car about a hundred yards ahead, and I run as fast as I can towards it. "IT'S HER!!!" I shout. I don't think I've ever ran so fast. Then his name pops into my head. Marcus. I know Marcus is in that car.
"TRIS, MARCUS MADE HER BLEED! HE'S IN THE CAR!" I shout. "TOBIAS!!!" she yells. I notice that the car is turning around and hauling butt towards us. "TURN AROUND!!" I shout. "NO, RUN TOWARDS IT!" she shouts.
I am nothing but adrenaline, and I don't even feel tired. The car is getting closer, and I hear gun shots. I stare at who is in the seats. Marcus, and Peter is driving.
Tris starts shooting, and shoots Peter but not Marcus. The car swerves towards Tris, and she gasps and she jumps onto the hood of the car. "TRIS!" I shout. She jumps off, and springs up. She runs after the car as it slows down.
She shoots again, and nothing happens. The car flings forward in a ditch. But it doesn't flip. I run straight to it, and Tris is dragging Marcus from the passenger seat. I run straight for the trunk, and open it. Empty.
"It's EMPTY!" I shout, and stop over to Marcus. Tris steps away, and I stare at him. I see nothing but pure hate in his eyes. I yank him up by his collar and push him against the car. "Kidnapping your own granddaughter, and beating her! MY DAUGHTER!" I shout in his face.
Tris stands next to me, her hand on my back. To let me know that she's here, with a gun in case I need to shoot this coward. "IT IS ALREADY BAD ENOUGH YOU BEAT THE HELL OUT OF ME, BUT BEATING MY DAUGHTER?" I yell in his face.
I see nothing but pure fear, and hatred in his eyes now. "DO I NEED TO SHOW YOU THE POOL OF BLOOD I FOUND IN THE GRASS TO PROVE IT, OR DO I JUST NEED TO LOOK AT YOUR BELT?" I scream at him.
I knew he beat her with the belt because that's his favorite way of hurting us. I press him closer to the car, and dig my fist into his neck. I finally see why he had the Bureaus kidnap all of those children. He didn't have me or Evelyn to beat on, so he beat other innocent children.
"WHERE IS SHE?" I shout. He's not saying anything. I throw him on the ground, and he smirks at me. Tris comes over, and kicks him in the gut. "Hi, Dad!" she says mockingly. I smile, and back away. I want to see what she does to him.
I realize that she is holding a bloody belt in her hands. The same one he used to beat Natalie, I presume. "Remember me? The daughter of one of the councilmen of Abnegation? No, not jogging your memory?" she says.
"Oh, come on! I shot your little side kick in the leg! I beat you up when I was pregnant! Come on, Dad!" she says. "Maybe if I hit you in your head, that would help!" she says. "No, no!" Marcus says.
"But you don't remember me, so maybe I should make you remember!" shouts Tris, and kicks him in the head. I don't bother defending him because he probably did worse to Natalie.
Marcus is still awake, and I can tell that Tris is about to blow. "TELL ME WHERE SHE IS, OR SO HELP ME YOU WILL REGRET YOU EVEN LAYED A FINGER ON HER!" she screams.
I walk over next to him, and glare at him. "What makes you think I'm gonna tell you where she is? After all, I am the only one who knows." he says, and knocks the gun from Tris' hand, and presses the barrel to his head.
"NO!" Tris shouts, but she's too late. I hear a bang, and close my eyes. I open them, and a stream of blood has fallen down his face. Tris falls to the ground, and starts to cry.
I stare at her, wanting to comfort her. But, I'm too shocked. "I'm not crying because he's dead, if that's what you're thinking." she says through sobs. I know exactly why she's crying, and I should be too. But instead of pain, I feel anger.
We don't know where Natalie is. He is the only one who knows where she is. Wait, maybe he was bluffing? People would have to guard her, therefore knowing where she is. Or is she even alive?
"Come on, I'll drive." she says. I nod, and pry the gun from Marcus' cold hands. I climb into the passenger seat as Tris pulls Peter's dead body from the driver's seat. I slam the door, and look in the review mirror as Marcus' head is crushed in the back wheel as Tris pulls off.
"We are going to the Bureau, right?" Tris says. I nod, and stare ahead at the tire tracks. Please let her be alive...... Tris grabs my hand, and squeezes. I squeeze back and fake a smile at her. I can't smile, knowing my daughter is being experimented on.
I close my eyes, and try and imagine seeing Natalie at the Bureau, un-harmed. She runs into my arms, and I hold her in a tight embrace. Tris and I are crying tears of joy, and we leave the Bureau.
At least that's what I hope will happen. I can see the burned building ahead, and I hear Tris breathe heavily. They must be underground because clearly they're not gonna keep her in ashes. Right?
"Now, we'll go in the entrance. We'll separate off when we reach the end of the stairs that lead down to their cellar." I say. "How do you know so much about it?" she says. "I was held refuge there, and Will and his stupid map studying." I say.
She laughs a small, short laugh and we are pulling into the ashes. She stops, and we step out, quietly shutting the doors. "Tobias, I need a gun." she says. "Take Peter's that was in the front." I say. "There was a gun in there?" she says. I nod, and she opens the door and her head disappears.
She appears a gun in her hand and she nods at me. We walk towards the doors, and the both of us sigh before we walk through the doors that were burned off. I step over the pile of metal and walk down the burned hallway, with Tris at my side.
Short update, I know! I've been busy with a lot of schoolwork lately, and don't have as much time to update as I thought I would. I'll try and get Chapter 42 in as soon as I can! Don't forget to vote and comment! :)
