Chapter 34:

Tobias' Perspective

The paper rattles in my hand. Only one name is going through my head. Marcus Marcus Marcus.

What did he do to them? I never should have left them alone. I reread the note over and over again, trying to process what he means. Hanging from a window? Did Tris have to see Natalie hanging from a window? I gag. I try and erase the image from my mind.

Maybe he's messing with me? No, usually when I get notes like this, they are literal. I stuff the paper in my pocket, and yank the door open. I grab the bag, and stuff it in the front seat. I jerk the car into reverse, and stomp on the gas. I yank it into drive, and jerk forward.

I am hitting quite a few bumps, and the wheel is jerking. I don't care, I need to get to them. I turn onto an Amity road, and head to the Dauntless compound.

I skid to a stop in front of the Dauntless compound, and turn off the car. I grab the bag, and get out. I slam the door, and run straight for the door. I type in the code, and run across the Pit.

What did he do? Are they even there? I run across the Chasm, and up the stairs. I don't even think I'm breathing. The bag makes loud thumping noises as I run to the apartment door. I swing it open, and slam it shut.

"TRIS!!! NATALIE!!!!!!" I scream, dropping the bag. Natalie walks from her room, unharmed. Thank God. I run to her and pull her into a hug. She is off the ground. "Dad, what's wrong?" she says. Tris comes from the bedroom, and stares at me. Tears rush from her eyes, and she runs over to me.

"Tobias!" she says. I hold Natalie with one arm, and wrap the other tightly around Tris. "What happened?" I say. "I'll tell you later." Tris says.

"Did anybody come in the apartment?" I say. Tris shakes her head. I release the both of them, and Tris beckons me to come in the room with her. I follow her, and she slams the door behind me.

"WHY WEREN'T YOU BACK BEFORE DINNER WAS READY?" she yells. I'm shocked at first, but then sigh. "I went to get our phones and the car." I say.

She sighs, and puts her hand on her forehead. "I didn't know where you were, and had no way of knowing if you were okay." she says softly. "I know, I'm sorry." I say. "Especially with what's been going on lately!" she says. Her hand drops to her side, and she looks up to me with puffy eyes. "You know Natalie gave away six hundred dollars to the factionless?" she says. My mouth drops open.

No way, she was always very pesky about her money. She wouldn't just give it away. "What? That's not like Natalie." I say.

"I know. I honestly don't want to know what she did with it, but that's six hundred dollars gone. She's been saving that her whole life. I seriously doubt that went towards the factionless. Do you think she bought something?" she says. "What do you mean?" I say.

She comes closer to me. Her voice lowers to a whisper. "Something bad." she says. What is she talking about? "Weapons? Serum? Drugs?" I whisper. She nods. I suppress a laugh.

"Psh! Like Natalie would do that. She's not...." I say, but trail off. She had snuck out to that cliff and jumped it many times. She brought food over there, she stayed over there. How well do I really know my daughter? "I need to tell you something." I say.

"Me too." she says. We lay on the bed side by side staring at the ceiling. "You first." she says. I sigh. "Natalie has been sneaking off to a cliff, and has been jumping off of it." I say. Tris springs up. "What?" she says. I nod. "How did you know that?" she says.
