Chapter 25:
Tris' Perspective
I bury my face in Tobias' shoulder. He is wheezing, and I push from his grasp. My side is burning with pain, and I wince. "Are you breathing?" I say through tears. He continues to wheeze.
"TOBIAS!" I shout. He starts to cough. "Nurse! Help! He can't breathe!" I shout. I sit up and try to help him sit up. He just falls back on the floor. I start to cry harder, and his face turns bright red. "NURSE! HELP! HE CAN'T BREATHE!" I scream.
I hear footsteps, and I am crying. They lift him up on a gurney, and start to wheel him away. "NO! Caleb, get me to him!" I shout. I see a wheelchair next to me and start to lift myself up. I yell in pain. "Tobias!" I scream through tears. I sit up straight and start to wheel myself over.
"Caleb! Help!" I say. He starts to wheel down the hall, and I am crying. I hear Tobias' wheezing. We pass other doctors and nurses, and Caleb continues to run. I am so close to being able to touch the gurney. "Bea...trice.....I'm really.... tired."
Caleb says through breathes. "Fine." I say. I grab hold of the gurney, and hold on tight. "Let go!" I shout. "What?" he says. "I said let go!" I yell through tears. I tug his hands off the handles. He slows down and just stares. They are running really fast, and I am rolling behind them.
I hear loud footsteps behind me and I look back. "Tris! What's wrong with him?" says Zeke. I smile at him. "He can't breathe! Natalie's smoke..." I manage to say. "Huh?" he says as he hops on the back of the wheelchair.
"I'll explain later." I say. They make a sharp turn and my grip falters. I hear the tires skid, and Zeke yelling. I smack into a corner and fall to the ground. I land on Zeke and both of us are laughing. I didn't get hurt, but Zeke is moaning. "Are you okay?" I ask.
He nods and sits up. "We have to get to him." he says. He lifts me up onto his back, and starts to run. I never realized how strong he was. "Four!" he shouts. He doesn't call him by his real name for some reason. "He's not breathing, we need to get him to an..."
I can't hear them anymore because Zeke is falling behind. "Come on! You can do it!" I say. He nods. We catch up with him, and I can see Tobias' face. It is glowing red, but becoming paler at the moment.
A nurse is doing CPR on him, and I'm screaming out his name. He is not moving. "Why can't you run?" says Zeke. "I had to have surgery on my side." I say. He nods. They wheel him into a room but slam the door in Zeke's face.
"OW!" he says rubbing his nose. I reach over his shoulder and pound on the door. Nobody opens it. I bury my face in Zeke's shoulder, and cry. I feel him move and I realize that he's walking. He sets me down in a chair, and lifts me up on his lap. He pats my back and whsipers something in my ear. "It's gonna be okay." I try to smile but fail miserably.
"Tris where is she..." I hear someone say. I look up to see Uriah with Mariah. "Are you okay?" he says. "Does it look like it?" Zeke says. "Sorry..." says Uri.
"Aunt Tris, is Natalie okay?" I hear Mariah say. I look up at her standing in front of me. I wipe my cheeks and smile. "I don't know, I hope she is though." I say. "Where's Uncle Four?" she says. "I got him some Dauntless cake." she says.
I hold back tears and manage another smile. "He's not breathing, and they're trying to get him to." I say. Mariah is eleven and Natalie's best friend. "Oh gosh, Tris." says Uri. He comes over and wraps me in a hug. I cry into his shoulder and hug him back.
"Natalie isn't waking up from a nightmare." I say. "This must be so hard, Tris." he says. I nod, and Zeke comes behind me and pulls the both of us into a hug. I feel smaller arms wrap around me too. My side aches with pain but I ignore it. I realize that this is my family. They were all there at Natalie's birth, her birthdays. Everything. I wouldn't give it up for the world. This is my family.
