Chapter 35:
Natalie's Perspective
Mom is holding my hand, and Dad is doing sixty through the Dauntless roads. My head is on her lap, and she is stroking my hair.
I need something to distract me on what has happened in the last hour. "We're running again." I say quietly. "I know, sweet heart. I'm sorry you're having to live your life like this." she says.
"It's hard doing this." she says. We hit a bump, and Dad groans. "It's okay, Mom." I say. She sniffs. "No, it's not. You've been shot way too many times and no twelve year old should have to go through this." she says. "Mom...." I say, but she interrupts.
"I'm sorry. All your Dad and I ever wanted for you was a normal life. We never wanted you to ever see the things you have seen, and cried the tears you have." she says. We hit another bump, and Mom bawls.
"Normal is boring." I say. She manages a small laugh, and strokes my hair. "Tris...." Dad says sympathetically. "I know, I shouldn't be crying. Plus I'm surprised I even have any left." she says.
Dad turns off into the grass, in a different direction than what we're supposed to be going. "Where are we going?" I say. "They haven't shut down cameras in the Amity compound." he says.
"Oh." I say. "Which means that we're gonna be in the car a little longer than expected." he says. "How long?" I say. "About thirty minutes." he says. "Okay." I say. "I was going to give you your phone, but that is apart of your punishment for sneaking off and giving away six hundred dollars without our permission." he says.
I'm fine with the sneaking off, I knew I'd get in trouble soon enough. But it's getting on my nerves that I'm getting punished for saving their lives. I can't tell them though. "Fine." I say, frustrated. It's not like I can do much anyways at the safe house with it.
"We're sorry, but there's consequences for everything." he says. Not for everything. Especially saving your butt. "I know...." I say. Mom's lap is warm, but shaking from nervousness. I wish I could tell them, but if they knew they would never understand why I did it.
It was six hundred dollars out of my pocket, not their's. I look up at Mom, and she has fallen asleep. "Natalie, I don't believe that you gave that money to the factionless." Dad says. I gulp, and my face burns with guilt. "Why would you say that?" I say in my normal voice.
Dad is like a lie detector. Apparently, ever since that certain someone betrayed him before they went to turn themselves in he started to not believe everything everybody said. "Because, you are an excellent liar. And I don't say that as a compliment. I have seen you tell a bold faced lie, and you were quite good at it." he says.
I know exactly what he's talking about. When we stopped on an Amity road in our disguises, and I lied straight up to that masked man. And he watched. But he also played along, so he is also a great liar.
"I have done that, but that doesn't mean I didn't give it to the factionless." I say, staring at the car ceiling. "See, you're telling one right now." he says. Maybe it's because I don't want to tell you, because if I did you wouldn't understand. "Dad, I gave it to the factionless." I say.
"What did you do with that money?" he says. "Gave it to the factionless." I say. "What did you do with it?" he says. "Gave it to the factionless." I say. "Natalie Bea Eaton!" he yells, but not loud enough for Mom to wake up. He used my full name, I'm in trouble.
"What did you do with it?" he says. He hates lies, I hate lies. Who cares if he doesn't understand? I did it because I love them, and that's all that matters. "I SAVED YOUR BUTT IS WHAT I DID WITH IT!" I scream. Mom wakes up. "Why are you yelling at your Dad?" she says.
"What?" Dad says, clearly shocked. "I PAID FOR THAT HEALING SERUM! I SAVED YOUR LIFE IS WHAT I DID!" I scream. He slams on the brakes, and I brace myself. Mom sits there, dumbfounded. He gets out of the car, and opens the back door.
He un-buckles my seat belt, and pulls me out. He sets me down on the grass, tears in his eyes. His bottom lip quivers, and Mom steps out of the car. He is at loss for words. I calm down, because sparks are spitting from my fingers.
"I did it for you guys. I knew that you had to stash all of the money away and you couldn't pay for it, so I did." I say, tears coming from my eyes. The wind blows, blowing my hair into my face. I move it out of the way, and look into Dad's blue eyes.
"I don't know what I'd do if it was my fault that you two died. I couldn't live without my parents. It was my fault we are all in this mess, so I paid the price to keep you here because I can't live without you." I say. I am pouring my heart out, because this is how I have felt ever since I was told that we have to run. Mom is standing next to Dad, also crying.
More tears fall from my face, and I can't look into Dad's tear filled eyes anymore. "I did it because I love you." I say. "I was lying because I didn't want you to have to know that I had this much guilt." I say. "I would give my life for you guys, and six hundred doesn't even cover half of how much I'd pay to keep you alive." I say. I am yapping on.
"You would have done it for me, and you have before so I was on the other side of the story this time." I say. They continue to stare at me. "Okay, I've told you it was me. Can we leave now?" I say, wiping my tears.
"Natalie...." Mom whispers. She runs over to me, and hugs me. She cries into my shoulder hysterically. "Thank you....." she says between sobs. "I love you so much." she says. She holds me so tight, that I think I'm going to bust.
She lets go, and kisses me on the forehead. Dad is still staring at me. He lifts me into his arms, and his hand holds the back of my head. I wrap my arms around his neck, and stare at the tall grass swaying in the wind. At first, it calms me. But then it reminds me that we are running.
"Thank you. I love you." Dad whispers in my ear. "I love you too." I say.
