Chapter 36:
Tobias' Perspective
Lavender and honey. Tears are rolling down my face, and onto her shirt. She spent six hundred dollars of her money to save us. I don't know what to say. "I'm sorry I yelled at you." I say. "It's okay, we just need to leave." Natalie says.
I set her down, and she runs over to her car door. Tris steps over to me, and stares at me, tears also rolling down her face. "I....I....." she says. "I know...." I say, and take her in my arms. She bawls into my shoulder, and I hold her around her back.
She wraps her arms around my neck, and stares at me with puffy, red eyes. "I don't know what to say." I say. "She loves us." she says. "I know." I say. "I mean, of course when you love someone you'd do anything for them, it's just that this was unexpected." she says.
I nod, and she presses her lips to mine. I hear gagging, and glance towards the direction of the car. Natalie is making fake gagging noises, and crossing her eyes. I roll my eyes, and pull away. Tris is fake smiling and I probably am too. I still want to cry, but now is not the time. I get into the car, and drive forward.
None of us spoke during the car ride, and now I'm pulling into the garage. Natalie leaves, and Tris and I stay. "I want to get up, but I feel too weak." she says. "You are not weak." I say. She snorts. "Anyway, I've got to do laundry, make more dinner, wash dishes, do home school with Natalie, and ohhhhhh....." she says, but falls onto my shoulder. I snicker, and lean my head on hers.
"I could help." I say. She lifts her head up, and laughs. "Thanks, but you've got plenty to do yourself, mister." she says, poking my chest. "I know..." I say, sighing. I have to re-load and clean all of the guns. But I don't think that's as tiring as what Tris has to do.
I used to clean and re-load guns all the time, Tris had to start adjusting to that just a couple weeks after Natalie was born. I think I have to do more, but I don't know what. She looks at me with those blue gray eyes that I fall in love with more each time I look at them. She touches my face with her finger tips, and then I feel a sharp pain on the same cheek.
"Let's go!" she says, and hops out of the car. I rub my cheek, and sigh. "That hurt!" I say, stepping out. "I intended it to." she says, shutting the door. I sigh, and type in the code. I swing open the metal door, and walk down the stairs. I hear a loud banging, and start to run down the stairs. "Tris!" I say. "What?" she says, as I walk into the kitchen.
"What's that banging?" I say. She points into the living room, and I look where she is pointing. Natalie is banging her head on the coffee table. I walk over, and stare at her for a second before I put my hand on the coffee table.
She continues to bang her head on my hand until I clear my throat. She looks up at me, and groans. "What's wrong?" I say. Her forehead is red. "I was reading my book, and I....." she says, but then yells out. "I....." she says, but snickers. "Farted....." she says, and laughs.
"And I accidentally lit my hands, and I turned my book into ashes." she says, groaning and throws herself on the couch. I put my hand over my mouth to keep from laughing. "It's not funny!" she says. I bite my lip, and manage a small smile. "I'm sorry." I say. She groans. "I was at a cliff hanger too! Now my butt has ruined it all!" she yells, and bangs her head on the coffee table.
I start laughing, and pick her up. "What was the book called?" I say. "Doesn't matter. It was a book I wrote with Mariah." she says. I bite my lip. They took almost a whole year to write that book. I never read it, but from the sounds of it, it was very important to them.
"Mariah's gonna hate me!" she says. I throw her down on the couch, and sit next to her. "No she's not. Hopefully she'll forgive you." I say. She sits up. "Yeah, hopefully." she says, pushing her hair back. I sometimes find myself staring at her. Not in a creepy way, but because she's my daughter. She's a very beautiful girl, and she looks a lot like Tris.
Which is where she gets her beauty from. But Natalie has long, darkish brown hair and bright blue eyes. She definitely got the brown hair from me. She used to have a duller shade of blue in her eyes.
But ever since she was injected with that stuff that gave her her powers, they were a much brighter shade of blue. Her eyes are the most noticeable thing about her. "Well, if she's a good friend she'll forgive you." I say.
"Okay, but until then, don't feed me anything that gives me gas." she says. I laugh. She also looks like that type of girl who acts super girly. But the people who don't know who she really is, they usually find out that she can be a funny, kind, and sweet person. And a person who isn't afraid to talk about farts.
"What do you want for dinner?" Tris says from the kitchen. "Burritos!" I shout. "Did I not just say don't feed me anything that makes me gassy?" Natalie says, and crosses her arms. I grin, and walk into the kitchen. I walk behind Tris, and wrap my arms around her waist.
"So, Burritos?" she says. "No, maybe some......." I say, but she interrupts. "Let's have nachos." she says. I set my head on her shoulder, and kiss it. "Okay, we have a daughter in the next room." she says. I stop, and smile. "Okay, but I'll be back." I say.
She snickers, and I walk into to the living room. Natalie is sitting on the couch playing with her flames. She looks up at me, and stops. "Hey, whatcha doin'?" she says, and jumps into my arms. "Nothin'." I say catching her.
"I heard you and Mom in the kitchen." she says. "You did?" I say. "Mhhmm. And I don't want to be anywhere near here when you do come back." she says. I laugh. "I'll try." I say. She hits me playfully on the head, and laughs.
"What are we gonna do?" she says. "I don't know, build a fort?" I say. "Yeah, let's do that." she says. I set her down, and she looks up at me. "Let's do it with Mom, though." she says. I nod. "Let's go get the blankets." I say. She nods, and I follow her into the hall.
She opens the linen closet, which reveals tons of huge blankets. I pull one out, and all of them topple on top of us. "Dad!" she says. We are tangled up in the blankets, and can't find our way out. I sigh.
