Chapter 18:
Tobias' Perspective
I wake up right where I was shot. I sit up, and find myself laying on the gravel near the tracks. I remember being shot, but don't feel any pain. I look exactly where I was shot, and don't see anything but skin. I look around and jump up.
I feel a little dizzy and grab my gun from the ground. I realize that Natalie was shot before I was and she appeared to not be moving when they carried her off, while I laid helplessly on the ground. Oh, I get it. They want me to look for her and when I find her, bam, I'm a hostage.
But I'd much rather be a hostage than not know if my daughter is alive or not. We're playing a life and death hide-and-go-seek game, and I'm the one seeking. I see the train coming and run next to it. The gravel crunches underneath my footsteps.
I grab hold of the cold, metal handle and throw myself in, landing on my left shoulder. I get up and sit against the car wall and let my legs trail off in front of me. Tris was at the Dauntless Hospital and is breathing on her own now. Look at me. I'm running again. I've been running to long. I had to run after Tris when she went to kill herself at the Erudite Compound. I'm having to run after Natalie now.
I look out the train car and see a body laying in the grass. I jump up immediately and jump out. I run over to the body. It's not moving. The body has long brown hair and Amity clothes on. No.
The body moves all of a sudden and sits up. I run faster to it and still can't get a good look at it's face. It stands up and stares at me. I stop running.
I'm breathing very hard, and I feel sweat on the back of my neck. The girl runs to me and I hesitate for a second, but realize who that is.
"Dad!" she yells. I drop the gun, and she gets closer and closer to me as I stare in shock. I find myself crying and she jumps up on me. I hold her tight and cry into her hair. "I was thrown out of the train. They thought I was dead." she says.
"How are we still alive?" I ask. I set her down, and she smiles slightly. "Those bullets were real, but they dissolve and the liquid that is made after it dissolves and heals the wound." she says as she shows me her leg.
"I was shot here. And in my chest. 3 times." she says. I breathe heavier this time, wondering how the heck that was possible. "I was dead for 20 minutes. It revives you kind of." she says. "I was dead?" I ask. She nods. She pulls a gun out from her back and lifts it to her temple.
"No!" I shout. But it's too late, and I hear a bang. She falls to the ground and the gun flies from her hand. What the hell? Why would she do that? I kneel down next to her, and see her wound. Bubbles come from it and her bullet wound gets smaller and smaller.
I jerk her awake. She throws herself up. "See!" she shouts with a smile. I want to yell at her for not telling me she was gonna do that. "That would be the most awesome trick to play!" I say. She laughs, and says, "I grabbed it from one of the men during a fight, and shot myself in the chest. They thought I was dead, so they threw me off."
I take the gun from her, and shoot myself in the chest. I fall back, and it kind of scares me for a minute, and then I'm dead.
I wake up, and for a second, it feels like I just woke up from a nap without dreams. Natalie is laughing. I get up and laugh too. She stops laughing. "We need to get to the hospital." she says and starts forward.
"Why?" I ask and walk next to her. We can't be mature when we find something to laugh at. Especially at serious times. "I don't know if Mom lived or not." she says choking. "She did. She was breathing on her own the last I saw her." I say. She nods.
"This isn't a good gun to use, people who are shot with it can be awoken if anybody wakes them up. But, if nobody wakes you up, you wake up yourself in 20 minutes." she says as she walks faster. I see her look in the woods, and I hear a stick snap. She tosses me the gun and walks towards the noise. I hold my gun up in front of me. I see a mask.
I shoot a bullet away from it on purpose, and it runs. I try to run after it. But Natalie throws a line of fire in front of me, and I skid to a stop. "What ya do that for? He's getting away!" I yell. "Shhhh." she snaps. She blows on the fire and it goes out, and holds her finger out to me, telling me to stay back. I stand there, my gun held out in front of me and she runs to the sound.
"No!" I yell. I hear bullets shoot, and Natalie slides to the ground and I stand there. This stupid gun, I can't do anything. She shoots groups of fire and a lot of the shooting stops. She looks back at me, and yells, "RUN!" I turn the other way and run.
She follows after me, her eyes flamed out. She's limping as she runs, but she still runs fast. "Those men have the same gun you do." she says. Her hair is falling behind her in flames as she runs. "But don't let them shoot you, you won't be dead, they'll kidnap you." she says. I nod and look behind me. About 7 men are running after us.
They don't shoot us they just run after us. We turn into a group of woods. I see men running towards us and I shoot some of them just to get them away and to buy us some time. Natalie looks worried as she looks over at me. I jump over a dead tree limb and she looks away. "I'm not gonna flameshoot. I don't want to start a forest fire." she says as she pants. I shoot more men, then I hear my gun click.
I'm out of bullets. I toss the gun into a pile of leaves and ignore the ringing in my ear. She's still limping and I don't want her to fall behind. I run up behind her and grab her around the waist. "Hey!" she shouts. I hold her stomach over my shoulder and with my other arm, I hold her around the legs.
"Dad, you're gonna slow down!" she shouts. I feel a gunshot whizz by my head. Natalie screams loud enough that anybody could hear her from miles away. I look from the corner of my eye, and realize she was shot in the shoulder. She cries out in pain and closes her eyes. I bite my lip, to keep from crying. I hate to see those I love in pain. Especially Natalie and Tris.
The trees in the woods smell like the wood the Amity use for lumber, but much fresher. The leaves crunch beneath my feet and I hear more leaves crunching, reminding me that there are men running after us. I feel Natalie's blood trickle down my back as she cries in pain. Why was there anything such as pain created? I hear squirrels run up trees as they hear running and gunshots.
I still don't know how I haven't been shot. They have bad aim, but yet they still shot Natalie. Natalie groans as the pain eases, and then she stops groaning and jumps out of my arms and lands on the ground. I stop, and yank her to her feet. She runs along with me, and dodges bullets.
"Follow me." she says faintly. She takes the lead, and I see where the trees end. "Natalie" I say. It's a cliff. We come up closer to it and I don't know whether to jump, or grab her and run the other way. She takes my hand and looks up to me. "It's okay." she says.
And before I know it, she's dragged me off of the cliff. I'm screaming, and trying to look down where I'm gonna land, but the wind pushes the moisture from my eyes.
Natalie is whooping, and laughing. She knows I have a fear of heights, and then she makes me jump off a cliff where I don't know when or where I'm gonna land. I put my arms to my sides and the wind forces them up.
My shirt flies into my face, and I land. Pain.
