The next day I woke up pretty late because of how late I went to bed. My feet were still aching so I got up to run a bath that I could sit in and soak my feet in. I checked my phone while it was running and had a text from Ashton that he had sent the night before but I didn’t get to read it because I fell asleep

“You looked amazing tonight and I’m so lucky that someone as beautiful as you is all mine. Love you lots xxxx”

I sat and smiled to myself. Can all this be real? Can he really be this perfect?

I sat in the bath and relaxed and thought about what a great night I had had. I was so relieved that I went in the end.

When I got out of the bath I went downstairs to watch some TV. My mum had already left for work so I sat in the living room and put my feet up on the couch. I heard the post drop through the letter box and got up to put it on the table for my mum. Out of curiosity I looked through them and one of them was for me. I looked at it and wondered who it was off, until I seen “The college application services” in the top right corner. I was confused and wondered what else they could be sending me

Dear Miss Healy

Subsequently to the letter I sent you explaining the withdrawal of your application to ‘The College of Social Science and Art’ we put your application through clearance to possibly secure you a place at a different college.

Luckily we have found you a place but for a course of Media and Sociology combined at ‘The College of Social Science and Technology’ for a 2 year course.

To answer and accept or reject this place then please log on to our website.

Yours Faithfully

James Woodley

I should be extremely happy. But I am far from it. This college was on the other side of the country. There was no way I could go there and live somewhere else alone and leave my mum and Ashton behind.

I re-read the letter to make sure I was seeing it right. All I wanted was to go to college, but not like this.

I placed the letter down and sat back on the couch and thought about it. I definitely couldn’t go. Could I?

I did what I always did when I felt pretty shit and got a load of food and sat watching TV. When my mum came home she walked into the living room and looked at all the empty food packets around me and knew something was wrong.

‘What’s wrong Jade?’ she asked. I didn’t answer first then turned to look at her before putting the food I had in my hand down.

‘Ashton hasn’t broke up with you has he?’ she asked. I furrowed my eyebrows at her ‘Oh no, he hasn’t has he?’ she ran over to me and wrapped her arms around my head and started stroking my hair

‘Get off mum, no he hasn’t’ I said pushing her arms off me

‘Oh…. Well what is it then?’

I pointed over to the table where I put the letter and let her see for herself.

‘This is great! I don’t see the problem’ she said, reading the letter

‘Mum. That college is on the other side of the god damn country’

‘Oh. Well you’ll be fine. You’ll survive’ she laughed

‘No mum this isn’t funny. I wouldn’t survive on my own with people I don’t know’

She stopped and looked at me ‘It’s because of Ashton isn’t it?’
