Dear Gilbert,
Over the past few years a lot has changed in Avonlea. And when I say a lot, I mean A LOT. You'd realise that when you take a quick look at Anne Shirley Cuthbert.
Anne is a smart girl, as you may know, but clearly not experienced enough. Everyone in the whole Green Gables knew that the redhead despised her hair. She hated it. Detested it. So, being an intelligent young woman, she found a way to dye her hair black.
I know, such a great idea, right? Wrong.
"Oh my heavens! What have I done!?" Anne was running around the house, gripping her now green hair.
"Holy Jesus, Anne! What is that?" Margaret was trying to stifle a laugh when she saw the ends of the once red hair now green.
"Oh,no. What will Marilla do? She'd kill me!" Anne tried to wash it off, but to no avail.
"Guess we'll just have to cut it off then." Margaret sighed when Anne let out a dramatic gasp.
"CUT IT OFF? ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND, WOMAN! THE ONLY THING THAT MAKES ME LOOK LIKE A GIRL IS MY HAIR! I'M NOT CUTTING IT OFF!"
And so she cut off her hair. She'd rather have red hair than green. She said she looked like fresh boiled broccoli. I thought she looked kind of cool. But I still felt bad for her. So guess what I did?
"Are you absolutely sure Marilla allowed you to do this?" Miss Barry asked Margaret when she came to her with a request to dye her hair the same colour as Anne had.
"A hundred percent, Miss! Thank you, by the way!" Margaret lied through her teeth, giving the woman an assuring smile.
"Alright then."
And now there's another redhead at the Cuthbert household. Took me a little time to adjust to the change, but I survived. Billy however, didn't want to let it go, so I got a new nickname.
"Do I sense another carrot in here somewhere?" Billy smirked as he pretended to look around the classroom.
"Wow, it's really impressive that you've found a new hobby of being a carrot detector. Really interesting." Margaret scoffed from the other end of the classroom, causing everyone to laugh, and Billy to sigh.
"Alright, you won this one, carrot head."
However, Marilla was simply not pleased by my decision, so I had to clean the barn with Jerry for a whole month. It's not a very tidy job, but I guess with Jerry being there with his witty puns really makes up for it.
"Move that haystack over there. No,not there Margaret you idiot! That's where I sleep!" Jerry was yelling from the downstairs part of the barn, while Margaret just shrugged, putting her arms up in the air defensively.
"But everything is hay here! How on earth am i supposed to know where your bed is!"
Lily really took a liking to our home. I gave her my bed to sleep in, because she overly enjoyed Anne's presence. I figured she'd like it there. The room's small, but cozy. I however, slept with Marilla, in her bed. She needed a couple of days to get used to me though.
Marilla was soundly asleep in her bed. Turning and tossing around, she stretched her hand to the other side of the bed, only for it to collide with something. A body.
"What in the-" Marilla screamed when she saw a figure moving below all the blankets, causing it to fall to the floor with a loud thud.
Getting up from the floor was Margaret. When she heard Marilla screaming, she yelled. "WHAT HAPPENED MARILLA? I'LL SAVE YOU!"
"Since when do you sleep in my bed, child!" Marilla angrily said, putting a hand to her now fast beating heart.
"Well, ever since I gave my bed to Lily. I figured you wouldn't mind."
But all's well that ends well, am I right? At some point I went to the field to pick some flowers for Anne's birthday. I saw Diana picking some up too. She knows Anne really likes daisies. Diana told me that her family will make a party for Anne. That was so thoughtful and kind of them.
"It should be in the garden! Oh, I have wonderful dresses that I would like to give to Anne!" Diana said as she tied her bouquet with a blue bow.
"I'm sure Anne will love it, Diana." Margaret smirked, giving the dark haired girl a side hug.
After Anne's birthday, I soon found out that Anne and Lily shared certain feelings towards each other, that they only wanted to share with me and Jerry. They made me promise that I wouldn't tell anybody about it, but you're not just anybody. So I'm telling you.
"Anne and I have came to a discovery that we fancy each other." Lily grasped Anne's hand in hers, smiling at Jerry and Margaret.
"Ha! I knew it! I knew it Margaret! You owe me a barn cleaning!" Jerry stood up and began jumping in the air, Anne and Lily confused at his sudden outburst.
"You see, Jerry and I had a certain bet about you two..." Margaret started, scratching the back of her head.
"He said you'd come out to us, but I said you'd rather keep it to yourself. So I offered him a barn cleaning if you do. And you did. Thanks a lot Anne." Margaret chuckled, causing the three girls to laugh out loud and Jerry to mock Margaret. Again.
And lastly, I went to the graveyard every day to talk with Mr Blythe. I read him your letters that you sent me and I always left a bouquet of flowers Anne and I picked out. You'd find that he's indeed a very good listener. I told him everyone misses him, and that we know he'll be alright up there.
I hope you are too, wherever you are. And I hope you'll be back soon.
Love,
Margaret
