Button eyes

Inspired by Coraline and Alice in wonderland

This poem is about how much a person will sacrifice for the one they are truly in love with

He was standing on a broken bridge

Trying to reach the other side

They told him that it was dangerous,

That it was where the shadows hide

Had enough of staying where he was,

He searched for her, though she had died

Taking a deep breath, he jumped across

Over the break that was gaping wide

He looked around, and stared and gasped

For, the people here had button eyes

They all just stared and all gasped back

No one made a sound, not even mice

"Why are his eyes so big and blue?"

"Am I seeing this, or are they lies?"

Whispers and mutters all around,

Coming over here wasn't very wise

He still marched on, undeterred, unturned

He had to do so, for her sake and his

He had only this chance to get her back,

The love of his life, his lady, his miss

Many stones he tripped over and fell,

He groaned, he screeched, he screamed, he hissed

He limped forward with all he had,

For, finding her would give him eternal bliss

Behold, he cried as he saw her at last

For, there she was, with two buttons, black

She just glanced once, and turned away

Will he ever be able to get her back?

He fell down, tugged his hair and cried

And just sat there, his mind went blank

He stood up, yelling and screaming her name

But she had disappeared in the dark

Lost and lonely, hurt and heartbroken,

He took up two buttons, a needle and thread

His eyes, they bled as he sew them on

They fell on the floor, drops of ruby red

He was gasping in pain, but didn't stop

He wished he had listened to what they had said

Still he had come this far, and had to take her back,

Either take her alive or take her dead

The deed was done; and his beautiful blue eyes

Were replaced with buttons as black as night

He struggled to find his way to her

For once, he thought that things would go right

But alas, she was in an embrace with another

His hopes, all shattered, at that sight

Now the world was shades of grey and black

There was nothing left, no hope, no light

He had done so much to earn her love

He had gave up his eyes, he had gave up his all

He had done all in vain, for nothing but pain

He was running fast and had hit a wall

In a daze he wandered around, as his legs

Gave away, too tired; he began to crawl

Back to the break that broke the bridge

And ended his misery with a single fall
