If you asked Lisa why she loved photography so much, she'd probably begin by saying that it was the fact that it was one of the only form of art where the artist had so much, and so little control over their own piece of work. Our brain filtering thousands of information, it was so fascinating to know that we were seeing things without actually acknowledging them.Taking a photo was like pressing pause. You could get to see all the details you missed, changing sometimes the whole vision you had in mind when you first push down the shutter button.
Photography was a proof that the reality was split into two parts: the first one being how we thought it was, and the other one what it actually was. The first one changed constantly as we would learn more and more about a certain situation, modifying the original point of view we first had on it. But when did this process reach an end ? When would both realities merge into one ? How could we know that there wasn't still a bit of information left that we didn't know of ? Can perspective and reality be one ?
Who knew photography and philosophy were that close. Lisa just couldn't not love it.
She received her first camera at the age of ten.
It was a period in her life where her parents thought it was a good strategy to give her whatever she wanted so she would become more submissive. It had lasted five years until they realized she was actually the one manipulating them, and they immediately stopped. And it would be an understatement to say the tactics that followed weren't as pleasant as the first one. But it didn't change anything at the end.
She had never had any Photography classes and when she saw they existed in her college, she didn't think twice and signed up.
There were about one hundred students in art class, and only fifteen of them had chosen Photography.
"Wow," she found herself speaking out loud as she entered the class, "why so few ?"
" I know right, now that everyone has a camera in their smartphone, students tend to think they're already expert in the art of taking pictures."
Lisa turned in the direction of the voice right behind her. She found herself facing a smiling young man, who although way taller than her, had the least intimidating face expression in the world.
"Are people that stupid..." Sighed Lisa, it wasn't even a question at this point. More like a confirmation of what she already knew.
The young man just laughed as he passed before her. He took a sit at a table in the back and looked at her expectantly. Lisa took this as an invitation and went to sit next to him.
"I'm guessing I'm not stupid then ?" asked the young man again.
"I don't know, but the fact that you're here is the proof you didn't act like one, that's for sure." She closed her eyes and leaned back in her seat.
"I'll take that hahaha"
This guy was funny, and Lisa immediately thought she could get along with him.
"By the way," he continued, "I'm sorry if I was very upfront earlier, but you reminded me of my childhood friend back in my hometown."
"Oh my god," Lisa's eyes opened widely as her she covered her mouth in shock, "Brandon ?"
"Fail, it's Taehyung," said the boy unimpressed, "and you need to work on your acting."
"Damnit..."
"Sorry," he laughed, "but seriously, what would you have done if you had guessed my name right ?"
"Improvise, like always," responded Lisa nonchalantly.
"I see." The boy leaned back with Lisa and handed his hand toward her. "Anyway, it's a pleasure to meet you Ms..."
"Lisa Manoban," Lisa shook his hand smiling.
The bell rang, announcing the beginning of class. The teacher, a woman in her thirties, spent a whole hour explaining the program of the year and the material each student needed. She then dismissed the class earlier, declaring things would start to get serious only next week, when they would start their personal project, and that by then, they would have to finish reading the book she had assigned them.
Taehyung and Lisa, who had been talking the entire time, went directly to the bookstore as soon as they left the class.
"The first week is always like that, don't worry," started Taehyung, "but things gets so interesting after. You'll have to create and present multiple projects, some of them will be under a specific theme or rule, and others will be completely freestyle."
"Sounds fun, I guess I can make an effort for the first week then."
As soon as they finished paying for the 300 pages book, they headed outside. There were only a few people since the end of classes hadn't been announced yet and Lisa took this opportunity to go sit at a spot under the sun. Those were always taken during lunch time. Taehyung just followed her and they both laid there, enjoying the sunbeams warming their skin.
"Hey, you should come to Kai's party tonight," began the boy, "he always throws one on the first day of school. To celebrate huh..the beginning of the year I guess."
"A party to celebrate school ? Sounds kind of lame, no offense." Lisa frowned.
"What ? No, it's not like that. Kai has a huge mansion no far from the campus, and his parties are always wild. Plus everyone always bring some expensive alcohol from their parents' cave, it's like a thing. The more expensive, the better."
"Woow," Lisa sat up, "now we're talking ! I didn't think students here even knew what alcohol was."
"From what planet are you? This is college, of course there's gonna be alcohol."
Lisa smiled excitedly. College was decidedly a very nice place.
Taehyung and her stayed there for another hour, talking while laying on the bench. When he had to go, he gave her Kai's address, telling her she could come at any time from 20 o'clock and that he would be there the whole night.
Right after he left, she stood up and walked back home. She needed a long nap and those benches weren't comfortable. So much had happened in so little time, she needed to rest for what would happen tonight.
