Christina wakes up singing a cheerful song. She pops her head into my room as I lay across my bed with my nursing textbook, open. "You busy?" She bounces down onto the bed. "Kinda. Why?"
"Because today is the day, you are going to give me the dirt."
"The dirt?" I ask, lifting my eyebrow at her, a questioning look on my face, as I stare at her.
"The dirt on you and Four. I want to know everything that happened between you two. I want to know, what is going on between you two?"
"Nothing," I say.
"Liar!"She yells at me. Chris has always been a human lie detector. She always knew when I tried to lie about something, or when I was trying to avoid talking about something. I begrudgingly tell her everything about the club, about breakfast yesterday morning, about him helping me study, and about him texting me yesterday after he left. By the time I am done with my story, she is jumping up and down on my bed, squealing with delight. "Calm down!" I groan.
"Can you at least pretend to be happy? I mean, come on, Four is totally into you, and I mean he is hot!"
I roll my eyes at her as I say, "There is nothing to be excited about. We are just friends."
Chris grins as she says, "Sure you are, Tris. Love is in the air, my friend. Can you please be girly for like a moment?"
I give her a look that says, what are you talking about, I am a girl as she whispers, "Will kissed me last night." After that statement, she recounts her whole date with Will. Her eyes light up, every time that she mentions Will, and I can see how much she is in love with that boy already. She gushes about how handsome he is, and how he told her she looked beautiful yesterday, how they discussed getting married after school is over. At that, I hold my hands up as I say, "Chris, you do realize that you have only been dating Will for a few weeks, right? Aren't you guys moving a little fast?"
Chris laughs as she says, "Oh please, Tris, stop being a prude. We all know that I have been watching and waiting on Will since Freshman year. In my head, I am already married to him, and we already have two kids.
I give Chris a pointed look as I say, "Fine Chris, I just don't want you to end up getting hurt. Let's concentrate on graduation and getting a job before you marry yourself off. What do you say?"
She rolls her eyes at me, and she doesn't answer me. The rest of the day is spent studying. I don't hear from Tobias all day, but I don't worry because he told me that he had a long shift that day at the hospital
Time jump to Thursday
Clinical is boring all week with nothing eventful. I take care of several post-op patients who have no complications, thankfully. I still haven't seen nor heard from Tobias at the hospital. Christina, mentions having seen Four scheduled for several surgeries, and even getting to work with him. For some reason, I find myself, getting jealous of Chris getting to see Tobias more than me this week in the OR. I begin to worry as I start to text him, asking him if he is okay, but he doesn't respond. My messages go unanswered and unread.
On Thursday after clinical, Chris drops me off at home. She goes over to Marlene's house to get ready for a new club that is opening a few towns over. She is going with Uriah, Marlene, Lynn, Molly, Zeke, Uriah's brother, Shauna, Zeke's girlfriend, Peter, Drew, and some other people that I don't know. I was the only one from our clinical group not attending this outing.
I walk to the park to stare at the water. The water always seems to calm me down. I am upset, and a little pissed at Tobias for ignoring my calls and texts. I keep telling myself that maybe he wasn't interested in me like I thought he was. Maybe I was some sort of game to him. My mind quickly switches to school and the exam that I took the day before, wondering how I did. Suddenly, I feel a presence next to me. I turn to find Tobias, sitting there. He looks horrible. He has bags under his eyes like he hasn't slept for the last few days, his hair is going in every direction.
