"Welcome to New Rome, I'm Reyna," Reyna introduced herself, shaking the hands of the others. She already knew us campers due to the meeting of the two camps.
"Reyna, it is nice to see you again," I said.
"It is good to see you too, but you could not have come at a worse time," She said, her brows furrowing in worry.
"What's the problem?" Lou Ellen asked. Reyna just pointed to the horizon.
"The darkness. We've heard of it consuming everything in its path and leaving destruction in its wake. We are preparing for battle, but even I can tell we would most probably lose. What can a sword do to shadows?" She related to us.
"It's almost here. Why don't you leave? Let's go," Lou Ellen said.
"You're fighting a losing fight! You're gonna die! Have everyone leave!" I tried to convince her, but Reyna just shook her head.
"I already tried. They believe that the Little Tiber and the borders of terminus will protect them," Reyna told us. "And as praetor, it is my job to stay and help protect them, even if I know that we will lose,"
Just then, Carter probably had an idea. He whispered something to Sadie beside him, and together they marched to the Little Tiber. We followed them, and when they reached it they turned to us. Sadie reached into thin air and pulled out a bag. Reyna didn't even question it, probably because of her time on Circe's island. Sadie picked out a scroll from inside the bag and gave it to Lou Ellen.
"That's a protection spell. Does anyone have a sword?" She asked. Reyna handed over an imperial gold sword.
"When we first met Annabeth we discovered that the mixing of our magic is extremely powerful. It may not be able to hold that primordial off forever, but it might help protect us for a bit. Lou Ellen, you know what to do, right?" Carter asked. Lou Ellen nodded. She unfurled the scroll and started reading it. Egyptian symbols floated off the parchment and flew to the Tiber, disappearing behind the currents. When she reached the last part, Carter struck the ground with the sword and yelled: "N'dah!"
A blue field expanded from the sword, going around the camp and surrounding it. The Little Tiber seemed to be powering the shield that they put up, probably from the spell they used. I took out a throwing knife and launched it at the barrier to see what would happen. The knife bounced back and flew towards me. I ducked and it hit a tree behind us.
"That should work," Magnus commented.
I nodded in satisfaction and went to retrieve my knife. As I walked away, I heard Will and Reyna talking.
"In case it fails, which it probably will, you have to convince everyone to escape," Will said.
"No promises," Reyna replied, "but I will try my best. Let us just hope that the darkness will be gone before it even reaches the borders,"
As we approached the camp I could tell that people were restless and some were even outright scared, praying to the gods for salvation, but I know that it won't come.
"Reyna," I called her, waiting until she was close enough to hear me whisper, "have you heard of what happened to Olympus?"
"We haven't received any news from the gods in days," she replied, "Any news brought from the outside world is the same: The Mist is lifted and the monsters were just running around and creating chaos"
"Reyna," I said, stopping. "We have to tell you something. Chiron IM'ed us while we were doing a quest before this,"
She stopped and faced me with a serious expression. I could tell from the bags under her eyes that she's been really stressed these past few days and probably haven't slept at all due to her praetor duties.
"Olympus. It's fallen. The shields went down soldiers assaulted the city. The gods have fled and are in hiding," I whispered to her. She stared at me with wide eyes, horror evident on her expression. She quickly composed herself, the expression gone within a second.
"Then our prayers for their help is in vain," she said. "We will have to face this darkness ourselves,"
"No," Will said.
"You guys forgot someone," Magnus added. Carter nodded. Sadie opened her mouth, probably to say something smartass, but Carter shushed her.
"Oh, yes! We forgot someone!" Lou Ellen basically yelled.
"Who?" Reyna asked.
"The primordial that we saved," I answered, kneeling. Everyone else copied me as they saw what I was looking at. "The goddess, Hemera,"
