3rd person's pov

The host and their guests were currently discussing the Kotatsus in the room. Emi decided to sit with the twins, since she was tired of listening to Tamaki and his weird rants about how cute she was. "So you finally came to sit with us, huh?" Hikaru teased, "Yeah," Emi smiled. "So you got tired of him, well, that means you can be our toy." Kaoru teased, making Emi give him a glare. "I'm nobody's toy, Kaoru." She gave him a sweet smile, which made the twins hug each other and shake.

"Scary."

Emi excused herself for a moment before walking over to talk to Haruhi and Kyoya, they were standing together watching Tamaki talk to guests. "Hey Haruhi," Emi greeted and stood next to her, "Oh hey, I thought you were sitting with the twins." Haruhi stated, but she shook her head. "They're too weird. Kyoya-senpai was the kotatsu service Tamaki-senpai's idea?" She asked, which turned his attention away from Tamaki. "Yeah," He stated, as he continued writing in his black book.

"What does he write in that book? Is he writing things down about the people he meets?" Emi asked, as she stared at the black book.

"Why would someone as cool as you fall for a crazy idea like a high host club?" Haruhi asked Kyoya, which made him look to where Tamaki stands with a small smile as Emi decided to finally go talk to him. The two of them started to talk although Tamaki was being a bit over the top but the two were laughing anyway, Akihiko and Ian had found their way over to the two and the four of them laughed together. Haruhi smiled, "Well, because it was a crazy idea."

Flashback begins.....

Kyoya was standing in his classroom talking with his classmates, it was his last year of Middle school before starting his first year in high school. His classmates expressed friendliness while Kyoya only cared about their socio-political views. "Hey, Kyoya. Would you like to come to the mountains to star gaze with us?" One of his classmates asked, "I could care less about star-gazing, but I'm willing to go to meet your father."

Later on, Kyoya sits at home being berated by his older sister, Fuyumi. She didn't like that he was imposing on the boy just to meet his father.

"It's a simple give and take."

"With you being the third son, father expects less from than our two older brothers." Fuyumi spoke.

"I'm determined to not only surpass fathers' expectations but to never step on our brother's toes in the process." Kyoya expressed. "I'm glad that you have ambitions. But will it really make you happy?" Fuyumi asked, but Kyoya expresses that his emotions like happiness are irrelevant.

As Kyoya sits at the table with his family, his father orders him to become friends with Tamaki Suoh since it would be in the family's 'best interest'. Desperate for recognition, he decides to befriend Tamaki stating to himself that it would be an easy task to do. The following day, Tamaki is introduced to Kyoya and Ayame, the class representatives. Tamaki gushes over Ayame's beautiful hair and when she blushes, Kyoya wonders if Tamaki's effect is based on his European upbringing. The two boys shake hands and Kyoya invites Tamaki to tour the school and Tamaki happily agrees.

"Hey Kyoya, do you have a kotatsu at home? Sadly my place has Western decor." Tamaki asks as they walk around the school.

"No, I'm not sure why you have such a fascination for them and the Japanese culture. But I do have Japanese decor." Kyoya stated.

"I'm sorry for being so insensitive.. I know that only happy Japanese families have them." Tamaki apologized.

"Well, if you ever come to visit then I'll make sure to get a Kotatsu." This statement makes Tamaki excited, as he jumps up and hugs Kyoya. "We're gonna be best friends now!" Tamaki stated assuming, that he can call Kyoya by his first name without asking permission.

"How did you become best friends with him in only a day?" Fuyumi questioned. "Tamaki doesn't know the meaning of best friends. I wonder if he even is fluent in Japanese. Although, I drew him in like all the others.. I consider him to be a complete idiot."

The next day, Tamaki tells Kyoya that he wants to visit Kyoto and then proceeds to list tourist sights that weren't located in Kyoto. "None of those places are in Kyoto but I will take you to see the sights." Tamaki grew happy and called him a god. While in Kyoto, Kyoya starts to reflect upon Tamaki's illogical-yet-charming nature and his having already won over their class. "I wonder how he managed to win over the entire class yet he is a complete idiot." Kyoya wondered. When Tamaki states that Kyoya isn't all that fun, Kyoya creates the perfect itinerary for visiting Hokkaido only to be told by Tamaki that he should be hitting the books for finals. That evening back at home, Kyoya rants to Fuyumi. "I've never wanted to hit someone so badly in my entire life!" Instead of being shocked, Fuyumi is secretly pleased to see her brother express honest emotion.

That Sunday, Fuyumi tells Kyoya that 'his friend' none other than Tanaki is at the door. Inside, he hears Tamaki playing the piano for the first time which brings him to tears. Later on, the two of them make small talk.

"What are your true feelings towards heading your family?" Tamaki asks, cutting to the chase. "You know, I envy you. It's much easier for you to succeed to be the head of the family." Kyoya states. "Well given that my grandmother dislike me, my succession to be head of the family isn't guaranteed." Tamaki states with a cavalier attitude which only serves to piss off Kyoya. Kyoya tosses the table over, grabbing Tamaki by the collar and berates him for being ungrateful. "I challenge you to shape your future to your own designs." Tamaki stated, which only makes Kyoya laugh.

It was now winter time, and the two boys sat in Kyoya's room at a kotatsu reflecting on their happy relationship. Tamaki outlines his plan for the Host Club which Kyoya initially deems ephemeral. Still, because he's come to view Tamaki as a true friend who accepts him as he is, he realizes that the boy will only continue to expand his horizons for the better. In his tea, Kyoya spots an upright tea leaf, believed to be a omen of good fortune, and he genuinely smiles.

Flashback over...

"Tamaki-senpai sure is something else." Haruhi smiled, as they watched Tamaki sweep Emi off of her feet while Akihiko and Ian yelled at him to let her go. Haruhi sweat-dropped, watching the scene in front of them while Hikaru and Kaoru watched in amusement.

"Yes, he really is. But he's a great friend."
