On the first day of April every year the Marauders waged a prank war against Peeves.
The teachers all realized this when one morning Peeves burst into the Great Hall chased by quills, ink bottles, nails, dungbombs and a whole bunch of other stuff that seemed to be throwing themselves at the poltergeist who was covered with paint that changed colour every ten seconds.
The Marauders could be seen snickering at the sight with the other three patting Remus Lupin on the back.
Peeves caught on quickly and the next day...
1) James' glasses had been nicked and he was as blind as a bat for the rest of the day.
2) Sirius marched into Charms class ten minutes late with his robes covered in unremovable green paint, and when asked why muttered angrily, "Peeves."
3) Remus was seen running from Peeves who chased after him howling like a wolf and screaming 'Loony loony Lupin'.
4) Peter had every single rug he walked on pulled out from under him.
So on 1st April, all the teachers came to breakfast after McGonagall or Dumbledore cast a Protection Charm in front of the teacher's table.
Even the older students had caught on and some kinder souls warned the clueless first years.
They all scattered when either Peeves or the Marauders entered the Hall, silently betting which group would win this year's prank war.

Peeves always howled like a wolf and screamed 'Loony loony Lupin' every prank war to annoy Remus Lupin, sometimes even wolf-whistling to kill two birds with one stone (a.k.a, annoy Sirius and Remus at the same time).
So when Peeves began singing 'Loony loony Lupin' when Remus returned to Hogwarts in 1993, it was his way of saying, "Welcome back."
Imagine his surprise when Remus didn't seem annoyed.
He asked Remus about it later, to which Remus replied rather sadly, "It's just good to be back."
Peeves didn't fully understand but realized 'Loony loony Lupin' had made Remus sad rather than annoyed and since his goal was to annoy and not upset, he never said it again.
