When James finally started dating Lily, Sirius began to wonder if James was starting to replace him with Lily and though he felt horrible for feeling and thinking that way ("She's his GIRLFRIEND, for Merlin's sake!"), he began to feel jealous.
He began hiding, stealing James' cloak sometimes and would make excuses to leave when Lily arrived. It took the Marauders hours at times to find him.
James did confront him eventually, because I thought you and Lils were friends now, why do you keep disappearing when she pops up?
When Sirius finally told him what was wrong, James slapped him and ranted off a list of why he wasn't going to replace Sirius, why he needed both of them and why Sirius was an idiot for thinking that way, with a nice little threat to hex anyone who said that kind of thing again to finish the hour-long speech.
Things were back to normal after that.
