James Potter would initiate group sessions. He'd just skim through his book and look around after that. If Lily were around, he'd yell, "HEY EVANS! LOOK AT ME, I'M STUDYING!" to which Lily would reply, "SHUT UP POTTER I'M TRYING TO STUDY!" If she wasn't, he'd try to chat with the others or just go to play Quidditch with Sirius.
Sirius Black, having an excellent memory, could just skim through his textbook and put it down. He'd usually end up with his textbook on his face, asleep, or chatting with or teasing James. He'd also try to chat with Remus but would get a snarl in reply ("Unlike you I actually want to pass so let. Me. Study!!"). He'd cast silly spells with his wand to lighten things up.
Remus Lupin is the only one who actually studies during group sessions. He snarls at anyone who interrupts because he feels like he needs to prove himself to stay at Hogwarts. This is especially bad during the weeks after and before the full moon. He makes notes and goes through them seriously and everything.
Peter Pettigrew always means to study in the beginning, of course, but is often distracted by James and Sirius' antics and can't concentrate. Sometimes he just finds what he's studying too boring or has no clue what it's about and falls asleep, encouraging a bored James to draw on his face.
