The bell was minutes from ringing. Ninth period was probably my favorite period of the day. Obviously because it was it was the last. And plus it was a Friday which made it even more exciting. But it was also my least favorite as well. Probably because it was English class. I hate English. Dyslexia made it almost impossible to follow. Not only that but the ADHD made it incredibly hard to sit still the whole time. It was like that for all of my classes but English was so boring it was the worst for me.

Mr. Hale was just finishing up some lecture about something by Shakespeare. I don't even know what the thing was about. I didn't even care anyways. I could just look it up on the internet later or something. I was drumming my fingers impatiently on my desk, sneaking glances to the clock every couple seconds as if the time would skip ahead twenty minutes in two seconds.

"Does anyone have any questions?" Mr Hale asked.

The bell rang suddenly and I sprang up from my chair eager to get out of class.

"Rowan!" Mr. Hale scolded, "The bell does not dismiss you, I do. I would think you would know that by now. You're in tenth grade."

A couple kids snickered behind me. I simply rolled my eyes and sat back down propping my chin on my hand. I seriously hated when teachers said that. The bell does not dismiss you, I do. Ugh seriously? Then why are the bells there!?

"I will ask this again, are there any questions?" When silence followed he said, "Okay we will continue this discussion on Monday. Have a good weekend."

I sprang up from my seat once again and rushed out the door. My eyes scanned the sea of students for Jonah. He was my best friend (even if he was a grade ahead of me) since I came to this school. Which was maybe two years? I should probably mention, I'm a foster kid. Apparently my parents left me on the doorstep of an orphanage when I was a baby. Nobody knows who they were. I was put into foster care when I was 7, around the time the orphanage got sick of me. I've been with maybe 12 foster families in the past 6 years. Finally I came to a family in a tiny, emphasis on the tiny, town in Northern New Jersey. This is one I actually grew to like. They seemed to like me too. They could deal with my troubled nature. Most other families only lasted a few months before they gave up but they've kept me for about two years.

I felt a light tap on my shoulder. Out of instinct I whirled around and slapped the kid who touched me.

"OWW!" he groaned.

It took me a second for my eyes to adjust to see who tapped me. Thick curly brown hair. Emerald green eyes.

"Oh god Jonah! Don't do that to me!"

"Gods sorry.." he said rubbing his cheek.

"Gods?" I said raising an eyebrow.

"Well um, my cheek's kind of numb. Sorry for slurring my speech a bit."

I rolled my eyes, "Ha, sorry."

"You walking home today?" he asked as we started down the hallway.

"Yes, and you are taking the bus."

"C'mon Rowan! I think I can handle walking down the block!"

"Um clearly you can't. You're so clumsy you nearly broke you arm yesterday."

"I don't even get the point of having a bus at this school. The town's so tiny literally every student can just walk home."

Remember how I said the town was tiny? Yeah this is what I meant. Everything is in walking distance. We only really need one bus for the school. It's mostly for disabled kids or kids too nervous to walk home alone. All grades are in one building, about fifteen kids per grade. One school I went to had maybe about 300 per grade. People have thought about combining our school with another many times, but the town is so secluded that we really can't.
