Avni's sleep was disturbed by a phone call. She woke up, rubbed her wet eyes and picked it up. "Hello? Ma'am?" "Lawyer sir you? So early? Is everything alright? Is his custody-" She began hurriedly as she feared that her son was being snatched from her but the lawyer spoke in between. "No no. I called to say congratulations. Mr. Khanna took the case back. He's no longer fighting it." His reply left her in a whirlpool of emotions. Some emotions, she couldn't come out of easily. They were indeed going to haunt her forever. "Thank you." She replied in a small voice. "And I'm sorry as well. I couldn't defend you that day." "It's okay. It's nothing new for me. I'm destined like this. Anyways thanks." She replied, ending the call.
I should feel happy I'm not losing my son. Then why is a different feeling taking over me. Why is Neil doing this deliberately? What if he finds out? He'll break down. Why do I care? Let him.
She decided to call him.
Neil eagerly picked the phone. He couldn't believe she finally took a step. "Avni-" "What are you trying to do?" She shot without even listening to him. "I don't want his custody. I don't want this rift between us to widen more. I want to end it Avni. Maybe we can have a new start all over again." He added hastily and calmly. "You know we are made for each other." He spoke. He really wanted to improve her relationship with her. "I don't think so." She said coldly. "Hm?" "Remember what I said before, what I always said? That I don't deserve you. I finally know I was wrong. I deserve better. I deserve to be loved, wildly, passionately, deeply. I deserve to be known and accepted, appreciated. And that's something you are not aware of." She finished panting slightly. Her voice softened now, depicting her pain. You know what my mom
It's sad when someone you know becomes someone you knew. Never make a decision when you are upset, sad, jealous or in love. Let my soul smile through my heart and my heart smile through my eyes, that I may scatter rich smiles in sad hearts. Some days are just bad days, that's all."
She cut the phone. Neil couldn't reply. Her words always left him like that.
Avni went to her cupboard and grasped her inhaler, breathed it in and relaxed.
She is right isn't she? Nothing lasts forever. He had thought that their relationship didn't count in that nothing. Maybe he was wrong. Like always. Why do the bad days find her?
Now Neil finally had the lead. He was going to collect all the proves. First he went to his cupboard and took out the tape. He still kept it with him. It was the only memory he had of her. He wanted to listen to it again.
I never thought that such a day would come on which I would truly realise that how much I loved you all. A girl like me can never put it across through words and expressing this would take an entire life. I have been fighting my entire life and I guess I was born to extract revenge. And I will keep doing it whenever a bad eye falls upon my family. On my dad. You protected me from all the bad words that everyone in the beginning spoke against me. Took my side when no else did. Even if you do something wrong unintentionally that hurts me, I will forgive you and protect you from anyone who blames you. I love you dad. Ma was so proud of you dad. It wouldn't even hurt her to know.
Neil paused the video tape. He need not listen any further. "Even if you do something wrong that hurts me.Ma was so proud of you. It wouldn't hurt her to know." He muttered to himself. "Avni why do you always talk in riddles?" He said in a frustrated voice. He got up and went to his car.
He pretty soon reached the place where they departed their ways. Vidyut's Mansion. The place no longer looked like before. It was black indicating a huge incident. Neil had gone to the place many times and every time he would bang his ears shut because he would hear her screams to save her. And he just couldn't bear those screams. They were like a nightmare to him. He moved some steps forward. He could again feel the brisk of her screams through the breeze. It was spring time. But even the spring refused to come here.
He entered the black hall for the first time after those hard ten years. The pillars everything were like that. Fallen. Broken. Like him. Even though chilly air passed through him, sweat broke out on his face thinking about the horrible fire. He had difficulty getting out of that phase. He went and searched everything in and out for even a slightest clue. Finally he entered a room. An iron cupboard stood there looking a little burnt but otherwise fine. He went there with shaking hands and opened it. It felt to him for a second like Avni was there smiling at him. Then he realized it was just her portrait, beautifully sketched and etched at all the right places. He took it and flipped it a bit to examine it. Something propped out of it. Neil took it. It was a pendrive. He took it along with him and rushed out. He couldn't stay in there for long.
He hung the portrait on his wall and played the video.
Avni was just flipping on her bed. Something was making her uneasy. So she went to her bed. Ayesha ma also did this. When she waited for Ashish. When Avni asked her she would reply smiling "Sometimes all you can do is lie in bed and hope to fall asleep before you fall apart." Sunehri came in and asked "Want someone by your side? You know you can always come to me?" "I know. I want to be alone for sometime." She replied. "And why is that so?" Sunehri asked again, her heartwarming smile visible on her face. "So none could hurt me again." She kept smiling. "Avni come with me." Sunehri dragged her away. She took her to an elevated place near the mountain side. Avni gasped.
The sky looked stunning.
A reddish pink sky hovered above a cliff. The blue descending sky was kissing it. But a gap was there. Covered by white clouds. "You see this Avni? You know every dawn has a dusk. No matter in how much light you live in will always have a shadow. Same implies that every dusk has a dawn. You think there is only darkness, a darkside in your life, Maybe it's time to find the light. The dawn. It's waiting for you Avni. Go and grab. It's meant for everyone. It's just you'll regret it later that you had the chance, you missed it. Forget him. He's not worth your tears." "It's as difficult as remembering someone I never knew." She replied. 'Then don't remember. Be in a world of yours. Don't care. They say na, time cares for none. Even you be like that."
..
Neil didn't realise when the video ended. He finally knew. Dad killed her. He was finally regretting his actions. Mitali had warned him "Her smile is there." Neil had said. And she replied "Don't let her smile fool you. Look into her eyes. She's breaking from inside." her words. He looked at her painting. The smile she had suddenly vanished. As if the painting never had it. The dark sky descended even more. His darkness was arriving.
We're not in love
We share no stories
Just something in your eyes.
Don't be afraid
These shadows know me
Let's leave the world behing
Take me through the night
Fall into the darkside
He was finally falling.
We don't need the light
We'll live on the darkside
I see it, let's feel it.
Why couldn't he? Why?
He broke down. The night approached.
