Adjusting

Avni looked at Neil and then the pendant he made her wear. She couldn't focus on anything except for the gunshot. Her head was spinning badly with the events. It was her birthday and she didn't even remember. The events were too hard to process for her soul.
Why isn't she saying anything? Neil was continuously staring at her stirring eyes. Finally they closed and she fell backwards but Neil caught her on time. "Avni?" Neil called patting her cheeks but she gave no response as she fad fainted. Neil carried her to his car and drove off to her home. Mowgli was already standing at the door, waiting for them. Seeing her mom like this he quickly ran upto then and called for her. "What has happened to her?" He asked wiping his tears. "She has fainted." Neil replied and tossed the keys to him while he opened the door and they both ran to her room. Neil quickly laid her on the bed as they tried to wake her up but in vain. "Now what did you do? Did you slap her again?" Mowgli asked his father angrily. "Bacha I..I can never." Neil replied trying to touch him but he yanked him away. Avni had got up by now hearing their voices and gave them quizzical looks again. Neil was now afraid of her look. Mowgli hugged her tightly but she didn't reciprocate. Maybe she was still living in her past and Mowgli... "Mom you just scared me." He told her but her silence was now unbearable. "Mowgli go back to your room now." Neil commanded him. "First you get out." He shot back. "Why is he saying like this?" Avni finally spoke. Thank God she didn't ask who was he. Mowgli went out to sleep in his room while this time Neil hugged her. "I'm so sorry. I know I shouldn't have forced you. I didn't know it would have such impact on you." Neil whispered. "I freaked out. I don't know Neil. I don't like someone touching me now. If you could just.." She didn't speak further. "You know that's our kid right?" He asked breaking the hug. She nodded. "I Don't want to be touched. I was never done so when I recovered." She spoke lowering her eyes. "That time is over. It's been 25 years Avni." Neil held her again but she gulped so he removed his hand. "Atleast let me with you tonight. You're not fine." He pleaded while she nodded. They both slept off. Neil forgot her words and he held her waist in his usual manner to sleep. Her body stiffened at his touch, yet again, so he had to unwillingly remove himself.
He woke up the next morning to find her gone. He went out rubbing his eyes as they spotted Avni. He went near her and as she turned she dropped the plate she was holding due to his sudden appearance. She was acting so strangely. Neil now forcefully held her and dragged her to the couch. "Look at me." He commanded her. Avni looked at him with fear in her eyes. "Kya hua hai?" He asked cupping her face. "I don't know." She replied while sighing. "That incident didn't happen again. It was just a fear Avni. You need to get over it." He said politely. "I CAN'T." She yelled. "She nearly killed me. You don't have incidents like this in your life. You've never even been to the hospital properly. It was a place of regular visits for me then. You don't know how it is to fall a hundred feet from the air to just the water below and no one to save you. You don't know how it is to get shot on your heart. You don't know how it is to..", She stopped wiping her tears. "What?", He asked, flowing his own. "I know this. Something else happened?" He said. "I was in coma for almost two years. And I can't get over it. I was dead Neil.", She spoke lowering her voice. "It's not easy to forget." She continued. "My Avni hasn't dealt with easy stuff." He spoke. "No one feels the pain you've suffered. I won't pressurise you further. Just act normally okay? Mowgli is feeling resented. So am I. He's so small." She looked the other way and muttered. "As if I don't try to act normal. Just because I am illigetimate doesn't mean I'm not normal. I don't interpret things in a different manner." "I heard that." Neil said. "I deny that you're illigetimate." He continued. "We're going home. Enough of time here. I pacified Mowgli. We're living as a family. We'll marry again but if it seems as a tiring job, we'll just go to the marriage registration office and do whatever is required. But. We are. Going." He said sternly.
