I bit my lip and paused for a moment, unsure of what the best course of action would be. I knew Sasuke's power well. I had watched him train for a full month straight. Sasuke's current most powerful jutsu is the Chidori that Kakashi-sensei taught him.
I was unsure of Naruto's full power since I hadn't spent a lot of time with him recently, but he certainly wasn't a slacker. It was obvious, even to an airhead like myself, that those two were rivals. Naruto was also well aware of Sasuke's Chidori, which means he most likely has a new jutsu of his own.
If I had to guess off the top of my head what Naruto's new jutsu is, I would say it's something dealing with chakra manipulation. Sasuke's Chidori is only a change in chakra nature so I would assume that Naruto has also mastered something similar to that. Chakra is never something to take lightly since it's the source of all power and energy so it's safe to assume that this battle is going to get out of hand very quickly.
The real question is, do I have the power to stop them from killing each other?
I followed the group to the roof despite being unsure of the answer. I had decided that the best plan would be to find Kakashi-sensei or someone to help stop them, but I had no time. From the look in Sasuke's eye I expected things to escalate quickly... very quickly.
By the time I got to the roof the two had already begun their fight. I stood beside Sakura who watched on while biting her lip with worry. I watched the two boys fight critically knowing I had no time to enjoy the match. I activated my Sharingan and tensed my muscles, ready to rush in at the first sight of building chakra between the two.
It didn't take long for Sasuke to get angry and activate his Chidori. I was surprised to see Sasuke activate the jutsu so quickly; I thought for sure I would have some time to react while he builds up the necessary chakra. I was even more surprised to watch Naruto, with just as much speed as Sasuke, activate his own jutsu. Naruto formed a compressed ball of spinning chakra in his hand. My eyes widened and mouth popped open.
Holy shit...
Naruto is going to kill Sasuke with that jutsu...
"Chidori!" Sasuke yelled, beginning his charge towards Naruto.
"Rasengan!" Naruto shouted, mirroring Sasuke's charge.
"Stop it!" Sakura screamed, deciding to charge in between the two monster jutsus.
An unfamiliar chilling fear raced down my spine as if ghoulish fingers tickling my back. With stuttering breaths I grabbed the back of Sakura's kimono-shirt-dress-thing and yanked with enough strength to send her flying back behind me, landing on her butt. I heard her choke slightly and heave a breath at the landing but was unable to sacrifice valuable seconds to make sure she was all right.
I raced towards the boys, still in flight towards each other. My muscles ripped at the strain I forced them under. I have one goal, to get to them before they get to each other. Naruto was about to jump from the ground to meet Sasuke, who was flying towards him from above in mid air.
I knew I didn't have the strength to block the two attacks and I didn't think I had the strength to redirect them both at the same time. Based on the chakra I saw with my Sharingan I made a snap decision that Naruto's jutsu would be the more destructive of the two. I can only redirect one attack, the other will be headed directly for me which I would be unable to block. If I have to be hit... then Sasuke's jutsu will be less likely to kill me.
I skidded to a halt between the two boys and grabbed Naruto's wrist with both of my hands, heaving his body in a different direction. Naruto stumbled with my shove. His eyes wide and worried as he took note of my current position, my back turned to Sasuke with no time to even attempt a block. I braced myself, prepared to feel the sting of lightning through my core.
But no shock came.
I glanced behind me. Kakashi-sensei stood at my back having successfully redirected Sasuke away from me.
"Oh thank god..." I sighed out. My shoulders drooped and I massaged my forehead, the stress and relief causing a headache to form. Kakashi-sensei shot me a stern look.
"Listen up." Kakashi-sensei started, his tone commanding. "Miyu, next time I expect you to avoid a situation like that. What were you thinking? Putting yourself in between these two. You could've died."
I bit my lip and looked away in shame. I watched Sasuke rip his arm from the hole in the water tower his jutsu had made then preceded to send a smirk towards Naruto who had only dented the water tower he was redirected towards.
"And you two. What were you doing up here just now? Fighting? The two of you are getting way too intense." Kakashi-sensei turned towards Sasuke, no doubt having more to say to him since it was the jutsu he learned from the sensei that was causing trouble now. "Sasuke, you need to give up this superiority complex you have. That level of Chidori you used just now... it isn't an appropriate level of jutsu to use against your comrade. Was your intention to kill Naruto?" Sakura gasped. "I thought I taught you better. Where did this immaturity come from?"
Sasuke ignored his scolding, send a withering glare towards Naruto, and jumped off the roof. Sakura began to cry in her little corner of the roof. Naruto rubbed the hand he used for Rasengan and walked over to Sakura, a serious expression on his face. Kakashi-sensei just gave us all a long look and left with a big sigh.
"Sakura, Miyu," Naruto began, his tone somber, "next time, don't stop us." Sakura gasped, the tears in her eyes welling. I gave Naruto a hard look.
I felt my breath shorten and my chest tighten. The muscles in my neck stretched and balled into knots leaving my entire back stiff and painful. My headache intensified and suddenly the light felt too bright and the birds casual chirping echoed inside my skull with reverberating pounding.
What am I feeling? Which emotion is this supposed to be? Is it panic? Anger? Sadness? The more I tried to push the emotion away, to hide it in that familiar cold black hole inside me, the more the feeling intensified. I felt ill.
"Next time..." I began, my tone frosted. "I don't pretend to understand how you two work, but next time you two decide to allow immaturity to dictate your lifespan I expect not to be shoved to the sideline." I ground out. Naruto shook his head sadly.
"Miyu..." he sighed and gave me a look of concern. Even when trying to force reason upon me he still shows nothing but caring nature. "This... it's between Sasuke and I." I grit my teeth wanting nothing more than to make them see logic. It seemed the two boys could only think emotionally.
What a childish way to think.
"Naruto, I..." Sakura trailed off, biting her lip. Her tears had dried but the crease in her forehead showed her worry still prevalent. "I have to tell you..." I raised a single eyebrow at her. The only thing I could think of that Naruto didn't know about Sasuke was about what happened during the Chunnin exams.
Come to think of it... I wonder if Naruto knows anything about Orochimaru, Sasuke's creepy-evil-superpower mode, or my Mangekyou Sharingan.
"Huh? Tell me what, Sakura?" Naruto asked, his seriousness gone for a moment.
"About the curse mark." Sakura spat out shooting her gaze towards me for a second.
"So that's what it's called..." I muttered more towards myself. Sakura rolled her eyes playfully at me then directed her attention back to Naruto.
"Naruto, let's go on a date. I have something to tell you." She quickly grasped the blonde's hand giving him no room to protest, not that he would've anyway, and began speeding off towards somewhere to talk in private.
Now alone I felt my composure crumble.
I put my hands over my face and let loose a deep sigh, wishing I could find some relief from this tsunami inside me. If only I could sleep, then maybe I wouldn't think for a little while. Is it too much to consider knocking myself out? It probably wouldn't be hard... just a knock to the head. Easy, then I would get a few moments of freedom from this... this utter hell.
Some big hints in this chapter for how things are going to play out leading into the last few scenes of this book. Hope you all enjoyed!
