The anniversary shouldn't have been an easy thing to forget. Because you reminded him right up until the week of it. But somehow, he still managed to fuck up and forget it.

Originally, you thought he was just playing dumb.

Then, you realized that he wasn't. Because every time you dropped a hint or tried to break his "character", you saw just how clueless he was. Merely because of the expressions on his face.

So, you ended up dropping it. Even though you had been looking forward to today since last month. The thought of possibly staying home and spending the day together was haunting you.

After you two had gotten ready for the day, you went to the hospital. The car wasn't quiet on the way, because Jackson was telling you about one of his patients.

You hummed and nodded on the right times, which urged him to keep talking. And som how throughout the entire car ride, he didn't suspect anything.

Which, in a way, spoke volumes about the things he cared about.

It more or less got worse when you realized that Catherine, was also visiting. Either for a surgery or to fill in for Jackson for the day so you two could spend some quality time together.

So, you texted her ahead of time to let her know what was going on and to not make a big deal out of the entire thing. That you were going to shrug the entire thing off unless Jackson somehow miraculously remembered.

Obviously, she didn't like that. Because the second you walked into the hospital, the entire atmosphere of the place wasn't very pleasant. Which Jackson also managed to miss.

Maybe it was the surgery he was going to do. From what you caught when he was talking, was that the surgery was going to be difficult. And that's possibly why he forgot.

But that's also the reason why Catherine was called in, in the first place.

"I'll see you later?" He asks, a small smile coming over his face.

You nod once or twice before forcing out your own smile, "Yeah, good luck on the surgery."

He leans over slightly, kissing you briefly, before heading off to the elevator. You watch and wait until he gets inside. When he does, you wave, then the doors shut, and he's sent upwards.

Turning around, this is when your shoulders drop, and the wave of sadness washes over you. The urge to cry is stronger than you'd like to admit, and you're probably going to have to hide in a storage closet or an on-call room until the feeling goes away. Or until the crying stops.

Dragging your feet, you go over to the stairwell instead of the elevator. So, if you do start crying, it won't be silent and awkward.

But the second you open the door, you're met with Catherine, who is coming down the stairs. She looks up when the door opens, and her face hardens into a 'mama bear' sort-of look.

"(Y/n)," she starts, the door clicks shut behind you, and she immediately pulls you into a tight hug, "I'm sorry that he didn't remember. But I promise he's going to learn his lesson today."

Learn his lesson today?

"What do you mean?" You ask, worry suddenly sprouting at the bottom of your stomach, "I told you it was fine?"
