——-The restaurant is warm against your fairly cold skin. Despite having been sitting in here for god knows how long, you still feel cold. Which could possibly be because of the dress you're wearing at the moment.
It's not elegant at all, it's just a dress that's been in your closet collecting dust for the longest time. Waiting for the perfect time to be worn. And tonight, just happened to be that time.
Although, you nearly didn't wear it at all. Not because you didn't like it, but because you nearly canceled on Jackson altogether. You like him a lot, but you were having second thoughts.
Your last relationship still has you scared that it's going to happen again.
You were one of those optimists that thought it wouldn't happen to you at all. All the men you've dated previously were kind and passionate about whatever they loved. And you thought your ex would be the same.
Of course, it didn't last like that for long. It never does with situations like that, he started off perfect, and then he turned into a nightmare that you couldn't escape no matter how hard you tried.
And Jackson came along, and you really got nervous. He seemed to be like all the other guys, but there was a certain edge to you that terrified the absolute hell out of you. Cause you thought it was a sign that he was going to be abusive too.
But unlike all the other guys, he was a doctor this time. Successful, rich and he has a legacy to carry on, which has a powerful last time. So, if Jackson ever wants to trap you, you're sure that you won't be able to escape this time.
Jackson proved you wrong though, he wasn't like you thought he was going to be. He showed you how much better he was than your ex.
Your past was kicked up when you transferred to Grey-Sloan, they had to look over your resume, and they asked all sorts of questions on why you chose their hospital over other areas.
The true reason why was because you wanted to get away from where your ex was. Moving across the country was the best option for you.
However, the main thing they were looking at, was the restraining order. So, you said that you had problems where you last were, and the conversation was over. But it still got out anyway somehow.
Quite possibly because of one of the nurses.
Anyway, so Jackson was extremely gentle when it came to you. Making sure he had permission before doing anything drastic with you. And you're so thankful for him because it means a lot more to you than he actually knows.
Eventually, after a couple of dates, he asked you out, and you agreed hesitantly, still not over the last time, but Jackson seemed to be good so far. He knew what he could and couldn't do, and he was alright with that.
But Jackson still got teased behind your back, about him not getting laid. When you found out, it was upsetting, because maybe he was saying those things about you, and then you found out that he was defending you. He didn't mind.
"Ready to go?" Jackson asks, placing his hand over yours to get your attention.
It draws you out of your daze, and you nearly draw your hand back from his because of the sudden contact, "What? Yeah, are you?"
He smiles, "I've been ready for a while now."
Your face feels hot, and you smile back sheepishly, "Oh, well... we can go now then."
He laughs, releasing his hand from yours when he pushes himself up. You do the same, straightening out your dress slightly when you do. Just to make sure it isn't sticking up in the back.
Jackson goes around the table and offers his hand for you to take. You slide your fingers between his to lock your hands together. When you've settled, he squeezes your hand a little.
It's quiet between you two until you both get outside. On your walk back to the car, you start to get a little bit antsy.
"Jackson..." You start, to say, but then you shake your head, "Never mind."
"What's wrong, (Y/n)?" He asks, looking over at you, but you don't turn to him.
"I..." You tilt your head slightly, trying to find the right words, "You're not... expecting anything tonight... are you?"
"No...? I don't–" He cuts himself off for a moment, thinking, and then it hits him on what you mean, "Oh. Oh!"
He stops walking, which makes you turn to him to see the expression on his face. And you're met with a determined look.
Jackson lets go of your hand for a moment, reaching up to your cheeks slowly, and cupping them. His hands are warm, you kinda expected them to be just a little bit cold.
"I don't know who put the idea in your mind," He says, looking you directly in the eyes, "But I want you to know, I will wait for as long as it takes."
You don't say anything, but a wave of emotions comes over you anyway. So, a lopsided smile spreads across your face, "Okay," you croak.
What did you do to deserve such a human being? Especially after the last? Is this the universe trying to apologize for what it did to you previously?
"You've been through a lot," his hands are removed from your face now, and he goes back to holding your hand, "And I'm not going to pressure you into anything. Don't let the people at the hospital get to your head. You're amazing and brave, and you're a survivor."
The urge to cry is a lot, but you hold it down and smile at him instead, and he smiles back.
This man is truly a gift that you'll never let go.
