"Listen, Mer. If I want to perform a really hard surgery then I'm going to," you look at her, trying to be stern but playful.

She was trying to convince you to take it easy because you'd just gotten off the plane a couple of hours ago. But, what's the point of coming to Seattle from across the country, if you're not going to say hi to old friends? Much less take unnecessary time off.

You're sure Miranda is going to be ecstatic. You were one of her interns and her heart was broken after the... incident with Jackson when you had to leave. Of course, you promised her that you'd be back. There was no reason why you wouldn't be able to.

"Don't you have jet lag?" Meredith asks, trying to find a reason now, although it's not as forceful as you're expecting it to be.

She's definitely softened up since his death. Which is heartbreaking on its own. It's obviously taken its toll on her, and you can't wrap your head around why Christina isn't stepping up to the plate with this.

Nonetheless, you're glad you're out here to help her along. Even if it's just for a little while and you end up going back. At least you're helping her out in the first place.

"Not at all." You chime happily, taking a gulp of your coffee.

Part of that's a lie. If you were to lay down right now to go to bed, you'd probably pass out. But you always feel like that to be fair, being a surgeon is exhausting. Especially when you get called in for surgeries at three in the morning.

Meredith doesn't say anything else. The elevator ride up is quiet, until the doors open again on the floor someone else chose. When you look up, your eyes lock with her.

"(Y/n)?" Catherine sputters, you take a step back, defensive now.

"Catherine Avery?"

Some people groan because she's standing in the doorway. But that problem is fixed when she takes one step forward and the doors slide shut. The elevator continues to go up.

"What are you doing here?" She stands beside you now, looking you up and down, most likely trying to find a problem with you.

Or why you would even think of coming back here in the first place after what happened between you and Jackson.

Which wasn't necessarily your fault. Honest, you and Jackson came to terms, it's not like you ran from him, and he never wanted to see you again. You just moved across the county to get a fresh start, and you guess that Catherine thought of that as you never coming back again.

Kinda rude, actually.

"I'm here for Mer," you say simply, the elevator stopping on your floor. You turn to Meredith, offering her an apologetic smile, before waving, "Got to go talk to Webber and Bailey. I'll see you later, yeah?"

She nods once, "Good luck."

There's a small teasing smile on her face when she says that. As if she knows that you're going to be harassed on your journey to see Webber. And she's not wrong about that.

Once you've set foot off of the elevator, Catherine is right behind you.

Nearly huffing out a sigh of annoyance, you start your way to the chief's office. Hoping that she won't bother you the entire way there. Maybe she'll get busy on the way.

Suddenly you're praying that she gets a page.

"But Jackson... he can't have you here right now, (Y/n). You realize that?" She asks, trying to keep up with your quick pace.

Rolling your eyes, you send her a small glance, "Listen, Catherine. I don't care what he needs. Just because we're divorced does not mean that I can't come to visit my friends."

"But it's not a visit," she hisses, that's the last straw.

Turning and looking down at her, you're fuming slightly. You didn't need this at the moment. Being bombarded by your ex-husband's mother about territory is just plain ridiculous and she can't seem to understand that.

"We've both been through hard times," you snap, squinting at her.

"Really? Because all of a sudden you wanted a divorce from him." She crosses her arms, trying to glare you down, it doesn't work.

"Catherine—" you rub your face, it's suddenly starting to feel really hot. Out of embarrassment that you have to say it out loud, or because you're about to yell at her. You look down at her again, "We talked about it beforehand and we both agreed it would be for the best. Want to know why?"

She doesn't answer, so that prompts you to continue.

You've been in Seattle for maybe five hours and this has greeted you. Maybe you shouldn't have come down here. Then again, Meredith is your friend and sometimes you have to power through.

Actually, you should've taken Merediths advice on staying at her house. Even if you were to babysit the kids or something. It would be way better than this.

"I had a miscarriage, Catherine," you snap, and that catches her off guard, "I couldn't handle it, and Jackson saw that so he let me divorce him. And then I moved so I could get a handle of my head again. Fuck, Catherine, Jackson and I still talk sometimes."

You spin and continue your way to the office, she's still following beside you. You know this, but somehow you aren't as bothered as you should be. The pent-up irritation is gone.

Maybe that's all you needed, was to tell someone other than Meredith. It feels like a weight is off your shoulders.

"I'm sorry," She says solemnly, you wave your hand in the air to dismiss her.

"Whatever, I have better things to go do. Mind telling Jackson I'm back?" You ask, but don't turn around as you go in through another set of doors.

She stops, and you go to the office, a smile now coming over your face as you enter.

"Hey, Doctor Webber. I have some good news..."
